The third-generation Rio with the 1.4 CRDi diesel was one of the more capable diesel superminis on the European market. The four-cylinder D4FC engine produces 90 hp, returning around 4.3 l/100 km in real-world driving. It uses a timing chain rather than a belt, and Kia's 7-year / 150,000 km warranty meant many examples were covered well into their life. The 2015 facelift brought noise improvements, a revised turbo unit, and a smoother 6-speed manual.· more· less

Excellent fuel economy (4-5 l/100km) 7-year warranty covered many examples
DPF clogs on short urban trips Pre-facelift turbo prone to whining
Buy if: You do mostly mixed or motorway driving and can find a post-2015 facelift model with complete service history.
Avoid if: You drive mostly short urban trips (the DPF will clog) or the ABS module fire recall has not been completed.

Common Problems
Reliable if driven properly, but needs regular longer drives
The 1.4 CRDi is a fundamentally solid small diesel with good fuel economy, but its reliability is closely tied to driving patterns. Short urban trips lead to DPF clogging, EGR fouling, and oil dilution from failed regeneration cycles. Pre-facelift models (2011-2014) have a weaker turbo unit. Cars with mixed or motorway-biased driving patterns, complete service history, and the ABS recall confirmed tend to be trouble-free beyond routine maintenance. The 2015+ facelift models with the revised turbo are the better buy.

General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
ABS module (HECU) brake fluid leak and fire risk (Dec 2010 - Mar 2017 production) Critical - verify completed
DPF regeneration software update (2014 CRDi models) Verify completed
Rear door lock cable length incorrect, child lock may not engage (Apr - Jun 2017 production) Verify if applicable
The ABS module recall is the most critical to verify as it involves a fire risk, even when the car is parked. Contact a Kia dealer with the VIN to confirm all recalls have been completed.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (7 years / 150,000 km) Expired on all UB models (last registered 2017)
Drivetrain warranty Included in the 7-year warranty, now expired
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Still active on 2014+ models
All Kia Rio UB models are now outside their original 7-year factory warranty. Kia's 12-year rust perforation warranty may still be active on later examples. Extended warranties are available through some Kia dealers and third-party providers.
