Kia Sorento 1.6 T-GDI HEV MQ4

Kia released service action SA515 for Sorento HEV models produced between September 2020 and September 2021, addressing poor flow inside the low-conductivity coolant pipe. The original blue inverter coolant could crystallize and restrict flow, triggering persistent dashboard warnings. In mild cases, a coolant flush and refill with the updated pink-formulation coolant resolves the issue for around 200-400 euro. In more severe cases where the inverter radiator has clogged or the electric coolant pump has failed, dealers have replaced those components at higher cost. Most early-production cars affected by this were repaired under warranty. If buying a 2020-2021 car, verify whether SA515 has been performed. Later production (2022+) uses the updated coolant from the factory and rarely shows this problem.

Kia issued voluntary emissions service campaign SC325 for certain 2022-2023 Sorento HEV and PHEV models. The Auxiliary Electric Water Pump (AEWP) can develop internal cracks, allowing coolant to leak from the fluid side into the pump's internal electronics. If coolant migrates through the wiring harness into the main junction block, more extensive damage can occur. Symptoms include a check engine light, 'Active Air Flap' warnings, and potentially reduced motive power. Dealers inspect the AEWP wiring connector for moisture and replace the pump if evidence of a leak is found. This repair is covered under the service campaign if applicable. If the car is outside the campaign scope or the wiring harness is contaminated, costs can reach 1,000-1,500 euro. Verify SC325 completion on any 2022-2023 model.

Hybrid Sorentos have multiple always-on electronic modules that draw current even when the car is off. Connected car features and smartphone apps that ping the vehicle can accelerate the drain. Owners report flat 12V batteries after 5-10 days of inactivity, which prevents the hybrid system from initializing. The 12V battery in the Sorento Hybrid is located in the rear cargo area. Replacement costs 200-350 euro depending on whether you use an AGM or original specification unit. The DC-DC converter (which charges the 12V from the hybrid system) can also malfunction, leading to chronic undercharging. A trickle charger is recommended for periods of inactivity. Like all Euro 6d petrol cars, the Sorento Hybrid has a GPF. Because the hybrid system often runs the engine at lower loads and temperatures (especially in urban driving where the electric motor does much of the work), soot accumulation in the GPF can outpace passive regeneration. The dashboard GPF warning light illuminates when accumulation reaches a threshold. Kia's manual recommends driving above 80 km/h at 1,500-4,000 rpm in 3rd gear or above for approximately 30 minutes to trigger regeneration. If passive regeneration fails repeatedly, a forced regeneration at a dealer costs around 150-300 euro. If the GPF is severely blocked, replacement costs 500-800 euro. This is preventable with regular motorway driving. Owners who only do short urban trips are most at risk.

The Sorento MQ4's dual-screen infotainment system has been reported to freeze, go blank for several minutes, or enter a reboot loop. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto disconnections are common triggers. Kia has released multiple software updates since launch that have significantly improved stability. In most cases, updating to the latest software at a dealer resolves the issue at no charge (or minimal diagnostic cost). In rare cases where the head unit hardware fails, replacement costs around 300-400 euro. Verify the latest software version is installed during any pre-purchase inspection.

Kia has issued a Technical Service Bulletin for certain 2021-2024 Sorento MQ4 models addressing brake judder, a vibration felt through the steering wheel and brake pedal when braking. The hybrid's regenerative braking means the conventional brakes are used less frequently, which can actually contribute to uneven disc wear and corrosion buildup on the friction surfaces. The TSB outlines disc inspection and replacement procedures. Front disc and pad replacement per axle costs 300-500 euro at an independent shop or 500-700 euro at a dealer.
