Entry-level compact crossover built on the same platform as the Kia Rio and Hyundai i20. The naturally aspirated 1.2-litre Kappa four-cylinder is the simplest engine available in the Stonic lineup: no turbo, no direct injection, no particulate filter, and paired exclusively with a 5-speed manual gearbox. Performance is modest at 84 hp, but the ownership proposition is straightforward. Available from launch in 2017 through early 2025, when tightening European emissions regulations phased it out in favour of the 1.0 T-GDI.· more· less

Buy if: You want an affordable, low-risk crossover with a simple engine, manual gearbox, and potentially years of remaining Kia warranty.

Common Problems
One of the lowest-risk used cars in the compact crossover segment
The 1.2 MPI Kappa engine is a simple, naturally aspirated four-cylinder with no turbocharger, no direct injection, and no particulate filter. ADAC breakdown statistics show the Stonic performing well: 3.4 breakdowns per 1,000 vehicles for 2020 models and 3.5 per 1,000 for 2019 models (rising to 5.9 for 2018, the first production year). In the 2025 What Car? reliability survey, the Stonic placed 10th out of 35 small SUVs, above the Ford Puma, Nissan Juke, and Renault Captur. Just one in four owners reported any fault, and the majority (71%) were fixed free of charge under warranty. The most commonly reported issues are minor: 12V battery drain, suspension wear items, and occasional infotainment glitches. No widespread engine or gearbox failures are documented for this variant. Combined with Kia's 7-year / 150,000 km transferable warranty, the ownership risk is among the lowest in the segment.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Brake booster vacuum pump failure (2018-2020 production, KBA ref 013136) - tandem pump mesh filter blockage can cause reduced braking assistance and increased stopping distances Critical - verify completed
EGR valve short circuit risk (2024 production, KBA ref 14327R) - short circuit in exhaust gas recirculation valve can lead to engine stall; 7,771 Picanto and Stonic vehicles affected Verify if applicable
Takata airbag inflator replacement (applicable to certain 2017-2018 production vehicles) Verify if applicable
Contact a Kia dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The brake booster recall (KBA 013136) is particularly important for 2018-2020 models, as the mesh filter blockage in the vacuum pump can reduce braking assistance without warning. The 2024 EGR recall (KBA 14327R) affects a narrow production window (January-February 2024) and may not apply to the 1.2 MPI variant.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (7 years / 150,000 km) Still active on 2019+ registrations, expired on 2017-2018 models
Paint warranty (5 years / 150,000 km) Expired on pre-2021 models
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Active on all Stonic models
Kia's 7-year / 150,000 km warranty is one of the most generous in the industry and transfers to subsequent owners without additional cost. A 2020 registration still has coverage until 2027. The warranty requires servicing at the prescribed intervals (every 15,000 km or 12 months) at an authorised Kia dealer or approved service partner. Missed or significantly late services can void coverage. Verify warranty status and service compliance with a Kia dealer using the VIN before purchase.
