Second-generation Kia Picanto with the larger 1.2 Kappa four-cylinder, sold across Europe as a cheap, well-built city car. The chain-driven naturally aspirated engine has no DPF, no turbo, and no dual-clutch gearbox to worry about, which keeps running costs low. Most cars came with Kia's original 7-year/150,000 km warranty, so service histories tend to be complete on examples that stayed within the dealer network.· more· less

Chain-driven engine, no timing belt Cheap parts and simple mechanics
Timing chain rattle on neglected cars Front suspension bushings wear early
Buy if: You want a simple, cheap-to-run city car with full Kia service history and a chain-driven engine that needs no major scheduled work.
Avoid if: You frequently drive on motorways or carry four adults — the 84 hp 1.2 feels strained and noisy at higher speeds.

Common Problems
One of the more reliable cars in this segment
The Kia Picanto 1.2 TA has no major recurring engine, gearbox or electronics issues. Most reported problems are wear items (suspension bushings, battery, AC) rather than design flaws. A clean example with documented service history should be cheap to keep on the road. The only mechanical failure worth listening for is timing chain rattle on cold start; everything else is either normal age-related wear or a minor consumable.

General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Fuel filler neck rubber hose (TA range) Verify completed
ABS / ESP control unit software (selected build dates) Verify if applicable
Front passenger airbag wiring (early TA build) Verify completed
Contact Kia with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. Recall coverage varies between European markets, and some campaigns were silent service actions rather than full safety recalls.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (7 years / 150,000 km) Expired on all TA Picantos
Anti-perforation (rust) warranty 12 years (still active on later cars)
Paint warranty 5 years — expired
All TA Picantos are now outside the original 7-year/150,000 km mechanical warranty. The 12-year anti-perforation rust warranty may still apply to cars first registered after 2014, depending on country.
