The third-generation Rio brought Kia into serious contention as a mainstream European supermini. The 1.4 Gamma G4FA is a simple naturally aspirated four-cylinder with timing chain and multi-point injection, shared with the Hyundai i20. Backed by Kia's 7-year warranty (now expired on all UB models), it remains a low-cost commuter with affordable parts. The 2015 facelift improved noise insulation and added a smoother 6-speed gearbox option.· more· less

Common Problems
Straightforward and cheap to maintain, but check the basics
The UB Rio with the 1.4 G4FA is one of the more affordable superminis to own. The naturally aspirated engine avoids turbo and direct-injection complexity, and parts are widely available at low prices. The main concerns are clutch hydraulics on pre-facelift cars, premature drop link wear, and the HECU fire recall which must be verified before purchase. Manual gearbox cars are significantly more reliable than 4-speed automatics. The 2015+ facelift addressed several issues including noise insulation, gearbox refinement, and clutch reliability.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
HECU brake fluid leak and fire risk (2011-2017 production, recall SC284) Critical - verify completed
Rear door child lock cable incorrect length (April-June 2017 production) Verify completed
Takata airbag inflator replacement (various production dates) Verify completed
Contact a Kia dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The HECU recall is the most critical as it addresses a potential fire risk while parked or driving. Park outside and away from structures until the HECU recall is confirmed complete.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (7 years / 150,000 km) Expired on all UB models (last built 2017)
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Active on 2014+ models until at least 2026
All Kia Rio UB models are now outside their original 7-year factory warranty. The 12-year rust perforation warranty may still be active on newer examples. Kia's warranty was transferable to subsequent owners, provided the service schedule was followed. For any remaining warranty queries, contact a Kia dealer with the VIN.

Kia Rio 1.0 T-GDI YB
Kia Rio 1.0 T-GDI YB 2017-2023
Next generation with turbo 3-cylinder. More refined but adds GPF clogging and DCT gearbox concerns the UB's simple setup avoids.
Ford Fiesta 1.0 EcoBoost Mk7
Ford Fiesta 1.0 EcoBoost Mk7 2012-2017
Better to drive but the 3-cylinder turbo has wet timing belt and coolant system issues. Higher running costs than the Rio.
Hyundai i20 1.4 GB
Hyundai i20 1.4 GB 2014-2020
Same G4FA engine, very similar reliability. Hyundai's 5-year warranty is shorter than Kia's 7 years, but both are now expired on most cars.
Kia Rio 1.2 YB
Kia Rio 1.2 YB 2017-2024
Newer generation with smaller Kappa engine. Similar simplicity, improved noise insulation, and HECU recall also applies to early builds.
Volkswagen Polo 1.2 TSI Mk5
Volkswagen Polo 1.2 TSI Mk5 2009-2014
More refined but the EA111 turbo has notorious timing chain defects. The Rio's naturally aspirated engine is simpler and more reliable.
