The second-generation Kia Sorento moved to a unibody platform shared with the Hyundai Santa Fe, offering a more car-like driving experience than its body-on-frame predecessor. The 2.0 CRDi D4HA produces 150 hp and 383 Nm, available with a 6-speed manual gearbox in either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive configurations. It slots below the more popular 2.2 CRDi in the range, offering lower running costs in exchange for noticeably less performance in a vehicle of this size.· more· less

7-year warranty (if still valid) Less stressed engine than 2.2 CRDi

Buy if: You want an affordable diesel SUV for steady highway use and can verify the HECU fire recall has been completed.

Common Problems
Solid diesel engine, but emission system and corrosion need attention
The D4HA 2.0 CRDi is a fundamentally sound engine that can reach well over 200,000 km with proper maintenance. The lower power output compared to the 2.2 CRDi means reduced thermal stress on the turbo and drivetrain. The main ownership risks center on the diesel emission system (EGR clogging, DPF regeneration failures from short trips) and underbody corrosion in northern European markets. AWD-equipped models add transfer case spline wear as a concern. Cars with complete service history including regular oil changes with 5W-30 specification present significantly lower risk. The HECU fire recall is the most critical safety item to verify before purchase.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
HECU electrical short and fire risk (2011-2014 Sorento XM) Critical - verify completed
Underbody anti-corrosion service campaign (2011-2014) Verify if applicable
Rear brake caliper piston fluid leak Verify completed
Heater core element overheating (2012-2014 XM) Verify completed
The HECU fire recall is the most critical recall affecting the Sorento XM. Kia dealers fit a replacement fuse to the main junction box to prevent electrical shorts that could cause engine compartment fires, even when the vehicle is parked and switched off. Do not purchase without confirming this work has been completed. Contact Kia with the VIN to verify all recall status.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (7 years / 150,000 km) Expired on all XM models (2009-2014 production)
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) May still apply on 2014 models until 2026
Dual mass flywheel Not covered (classified as wear item)
Extended warranty Third-party options available
All Sorento XM models are now outside Kia's 7-year warranty. The warranty transfers to subsequent owners, so a late 2014 model could theoretically have had coverage until 2021, but in practice all are now expired. The 12-year rust perforation warranty may still be active on 2014 models.
