2020-present · 2.2 CRDi Smartstream D4HE (202/194 hp) 4-cylinder turbodiesel, 8-speed wet DCT

The fourth-generation Sorento is Kia's flagship SUV in Europe, offering five or seven seats with standard all-wheel drive on diesel models. The 2.2 CRDi uses the new Smartstream D4HE engine with an aluminum block and electromagnetic injectors, paired with Kia's first 8-speed wet dual-clutch transmission. Backed by a 7-year / 150,000 km warranty, it competes directly with the Hyundai Santa Fe, Skoda Kodiaq, and Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace.

7-year warranty, best in class Strong diesel torque, capable tow car
8DCT transmission recall (oil pump) Diesel emissions system complexity
Buy if: You need a spacious diesel SUV for towing or long-distance driving and can verify the DCT recall has been completed.
Avoid if: You mainly drive short urban trips that prevent DPF regeneration, or you want a simple, proven automatic gearbox.

Common Problems
Capable diesel SUV with DCT and emissions system as main concern areas
The D4HE engine is an evolution of the proven 2.2 CRDi family with improved electromagnetic injectors and more aggressive emissions management. The engine itself is robust when properly maintained. The main ownership risks centre on the 8-speed wet DCT (verify the oil pump recall is completed), diesel emissions components (DPF, EGR, AdBlue), and AWD coupling wear. Cars with complete Kia dealer service history and predominantly motorway usage profiles are significantly less risky. Kia's 7-year warranty provides excellent protection if still active.

HVAC blower motor wiring harness fire risk at fan speed 3 (2021-2023 production, SC351) Critical - verify completed
Rearview camera mounting clips breaking (2022-2023 production, SC280) Verify completed
The Sorento MQ4 has several safety-critical recalls. The DCT oil pump recall (SC250) and tow hitch harness fire recall (SC249) are particularly important. Contact Kia with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed before purchase.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (7 years / 150,000 km) Check remaining coverage by registration date
Powertrain coverage Included in 7-year warranty
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Active on all MQ4 models
Paint warranty (3 years) Likely expired on 2020-2022 models
Kia's 7-year / 150,000 km warranty is the longest in the segment and transfers to subsequent owners. Most 2020-2023 MQ4 models still have years of warranty remaining. Strict adherence to the Kia maintenance schedule at authorized dealers is required to maintain warranty coverage. Verify warranty status with a Kia dealer using the VIN.

Kia Sorento XM 2.2 CRDi 2009-2014 Previous generation with older D4HB engine and conventional automatic. Simpler drivetrain with no DCT concerns, but more age-related wear and shorter remaining warranty. Hyundai Santa Fe 2.2 CRDi TM 2018-2023 Platform sibling with D4HB engine and 8-speed torque converter automatic. No DCT issues but AWD spline corrosion is well-documented. Shorter 5-year warranty. Skoda Kodiaq 2.0 TDI 2017-2024 Similar size with proven EA288 diesel. DSG mechatronics and AdBlue are its weak points. Generally lower running costs but only 2-year warranty. Kia Sportage NQ5 1.6 T-GDI 2022-present Smaller Kia SUV with petrol turbo. Uses problematic 7-speed dry DCT instead of the Sorento's wet 8DCT. Same 7-year warranty coverage. Toyota RAV4 Hybrid XA50 2019-present Significantly lower risk profile with no diesel emissions complexity. Higher purchase price but much lower running costs. eCVT is more reliable than any DCT.
