The Ibiza 6L with the 1.9 TDI PD is the diesel workhorse of the Mk3 range. Built on the VW Group PQ24 platform (shared with Polo 9N and Fabia Mk1), it uses the well-known Pumpe-Duse four-cylinder diesel in 100 hp (ATD/AXR) or 130 hp (ASZ/BLT) form. High-mileage examples beyond 250,000 km are common when servicing has been strict, and parts are cheap and widely available across the VAG aftermarket.· more· less

Buy if: You want an economical diesel supermini for regular longer journeys and can verify full service history with correct VW 505.01 oil specification.
Avoid if: You only do short urban trips (EGR clogs, turbo vanes stick), the car has unknown service history, or you see rust forming on the wheel arches.

Common Problems
Fundamentally robust engine, but demands correct oil and longer journeys
The 1.9 TDI PD is one of the most proven diesel engines of its era and can reach very high mileages with proper care. However, it is unforgiving of incorrect oil specification (must be VW 505.01), short-trip driving (EGR and turbo vane issues), and neglected maintenance. The biggest threat is cascading damage: a tandem pump leak leads to camshaft wear, which leads to poor running and expensive repairs. On 20-year-old cars, structural rust is often the real deal-breaker rather than mechanical issues.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Head airbag wiring assembly error (March 2004 - July 2007 production) Verify completed
Fuel pump cover bolts may break causing diesel leak (March 2004 - August 2004 production) Verify completed
Vacuum pipe to brake servo tension cracks (2002-2006 production) Critical - verify completed
Handbrake adjuster nut movement increasing lever travel (2002-2005 production) Verify completed
Contact a SEAT dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The vacuum pipe recall affecting brake servo performance is particularly important to confirm.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all Ibiza 6L models
Anti-corrosion warranty (12 years) Expired on all models (last built 2008)
All Ibiza 6L models are well outside their original 2-year factory warranty and 12-year perforation warranty. SEAT historically applied the corrosion warranty restrictively on this generation. No manufacturer-backed extended warranty programs are available for this age of vehicle.

Seat Ibiza 1.2 Mk3
Seat Ibiza 1.2 Mk3 2002-2008
Petrol version on the same platform. Cheaper to buy but the 3-cylinder has timing chain tensioner and bore wear issues. No EGR or DPF concerns.
Skoda Fabia 1.9 TDI Mk1
Skoda Fabia 1.9 TDI Mk1 1999-2007
Mechanically identical, same engine and platform. Same PD-related issues. Fabia tends to hold value slightly better.
Opel Corsa 1.3 CDTI C
Opel Corsa 1.3 CDTI C 2003-2006
Different engine family (Fiat 1.3 Multijet). Timing chain also a concern, but less power. ECU water ingress is the Corsa-specific risk.
Seat Ibiza Mk4 1.6 TDI
Seat Ibiza Mk4 1.6 TDI 2009-2017
Successor generation with common-rail diesel. More refined but has injector failures on pre-2013 models and DPF clogging on short trips.
Renault Clio Mk2 1.5 dCi
Renault Clio Mk2 1.5 dCi 2001-2006
Similar era diesel supermini. K9K engine is very durable but Renault electrical gremlins are widespread on these older cars.
