SEAT Alhambra 1.4 TSI Mk2

2010-2020Last reviewed: April 2026 · How this report is builtApril 2026

2010-2020 · 1.4 TSI (150 hp) 4-cylinder turbocharged petrol, EA111 (2010-2014) and EA211 (2015-2020)

The SEAT Alhambra Mk2 is a full-size seven-seat MPV built on the same platform as the Volkswagen Sharan, and the 1.4 TSI is the only petrol option across the generation. Pre-facelift cars (2010-2014) use the EA111 engine with timing chain and are the weaker choice; post-facelift cars (2015-2020) use the EA211 with a timing belt and are significantly more reliable. All 1.4 TSI Alhambras are paired with a 6-speed manual or the 7-speed DSG (DQ200) dry-clutch automatic.

Spacious and practical interior No diesel DPF/AdBlue complexity
EA111 timing chain failures (pre-2015) DQ200 DSG dry-clutch unreliable
Buy if: You want a petrol seven-seater, can find a 2015+ facelift car with the EA211 engine and a manual gearbox, and you need something with complete service history.
Avoid if: You are looking at a pre-2015 EA111 car with audible cold-start rattle, or a DQ200 DSG variant with no transmission service history.

Common Problems
Facelift EA211 cars are the safer choice
The split between the early EA111 and the later EA211 engine defines this car's risk profile. Pre-2015 cars carry real timing chain risk; 2015-2020 facelift cars with the EA211 engine have a much cleaner reputation and are the sensible buy. MPV-specific systems (sliding doors, sunroof) and the DQ200 DSG remain cost drivers regardless of engine. A facelift manual car without electric sliding doors and with a complete service history is by far the safest used example.

Extended warranty Available through SEAT dealers, varies by age and mileage
All SEAT Alhambra Mk2 models are outside their original 2-year factory warranty. The 12-year rust perforation warranty may still be valid on later production cars. Extended warranty plans are available through SEAT dealers but typically exclude wear items and pre-existing conditions.

↔ Also consider

SEAT Alhambra 2.0 TDI Mk2 2010-2020 Same car with the diesel engine. More torque and better real-world economy, but brings DPF, EGR and AdBlue concerns the 1.4 TSI avoids. Volkswagen Sharan 7N 2.0 TDI 2010-2022 Mechanically identical twin from VW. Same platform and sliding door issues, but diesel brings the usual DPF and AdBlue complexity that the 1.4 TSI does not have. Volkswagen Touran 5T 1.5 TSI 2019-2024 Smaller, newer MPV on the MQB platform with the improved 1.5 TSI EVO. Fewer MPV-specific issues but DSG-only gearbox and cylinder deactivation add their own risk. Ford S-MAX 2.0 TDCi Mk2 2015-2023 Similar sized seven-seater competitor. Different weak points: Ford's wet-belt engines and Powershift automatic are problematic, but no sliding doors to fail. SEAT Alhambra 1.9 TDI Mk1 1996-2010 Previous generation with the proven 1.9 TDI. Simpler electrics and no TSI timing chain issues, but much older chassis and ABS module failures are common.
