Bivalent CNG/petrol variant of the Mk5 Ibiza on VW Group's MQB-A0 platform. The 1.0 TGI is the same EA211 three-cylinder block with hardened valves and seats for gas operation, three steel CNG cylinders under the boot floor (13.8 kg / about 90 litres), and a small 9-litre petrol back-up tank. Low fuel cost per kilometre when CNG stations are within reach, but the CNG infrastructure in Western Europe has shrunk significantly since 2022.· more· less

Common Problems
Robust engine, but CNG-specific costs and shrinking infrastructure are the real concerns
The EA211 base engine with hardened valves and seats has proven durable on CNG. Most mechanical failures are minor and shared with the rest of the Ibiza Mk5 range. The real ownership questions are not mechanical: mandatory CNG tank inspections add a recurring cost, the three steel tanks have a fixed 20-year service life, and the public CNG station network in Western Europe has contracted significantly since 2022. Verify a working CNG station near your daily routes before purchase, and check the next required inspection date in the service book.

Seat Ibiza 1.0 MPI Mk5
Seat Ibiza 1.0 MPI Mk5 2017-present
Same platform with simpler naturally aspirated petrol-only engine. No CNG system to inspect or maintain, but higher fuel cost per km.
Seat Ibiza 1.0 TSI Mk5
Seat Ibiza 1.0 TSI Mk5 2017-present
Turbocharged petrol sibling. More power and refinement but adds turbo wastegate actuator and carbon buildup concerns the TGI mostly avoids.
Skoda Fabia Mk3 1.0 TSI
Skoda Fabia Mk3 1.0 TSI 2017-2021
Same platform family on petrol. Larger boot and similar overall reliability, but no CNG option means no tank inspection obligations.
Seat Ibiza Mk4 1.2 TSI
Seat Ibiza Mk4 1.2 TSI 2010-2017
Previous generation, petrol only. EA111 1.2 TSI suffers from timing chain stretch. The Mk5 TGI is mechanically more durable but adds CNG-system complexity.
Dacia Sandero 1.2 16V Mk2
Dacia Sandero 1.2 16V Mk2 2013-2016
Cheaper alternative on petrol with simple Renault engine. Worse infotainment and build quality but no CNG inspection regime to worry about.
