The first-generation Leon gave SEAT a sporty VW Group hatchback built on the PQ34 platform shared with the Golf Mk4 and Audi A3 8L. The 1.9 TDI was offered in four power levels: 90 hp (ALH, distributor pump), 110 hp (ASV, VNT turbo), 130 hp (ASZ, PD unit injectors), and 150 hp (ARL, PD, FR/Cupra models). The PD variants are more powerful but need strict oil spec adherence to avoid camshaft wear. At 20+ years old, condition and rust history matter more than mileage.· more· less

Buy if: You want an affordable, fuel-efficient diesel hatchback with cheap parts and can find one with solid bodywork, dry footwells, and documented oil changes.

Common Problems
Reliable engine, but water ingress and age-related wear need attention
The 1.9 TDI is one of the most durable diesel engines VW Group ever produced, regularly reaching 300,000+ km with proper maintenance. The non-PD variants (ALH 90 hp, ASV 110 hp) are particularly robust, while the PD variants (ASZ 130 hp, ARL 150 hp) need strict oil spec adherence to prevent camshaft wear. The main ownership concerns at this age are not the engine but the body: door seal water ingress is widespread and can cause expensive secondary damage if left unchecked. Rust is inevitable on unrestored examples in northern Europe. Budget for bodywork inspection rather than engine worries.
