Budget supermini based on the VW Polo 9N platform, sharing its 1.2-litre three-cylinder engine with the Polo and Skoda Fabia of the same era. Popular as a first car and city runabout across Southern and Western Europe. Parts are cheap and widely available through the VAG aftermarket network, but the 3-cylinder engine family has well-documented weak points that require careful pre-purchase inspection.· more· less

Buy if: You want an inexpensive city car and can verify the engine is quiet on cold start with no unusual oil consumption.
Avoid if: The engine rattles on cold start or shows signs of excessive oil consumption, as internal engine repairs often exceed the car's value.

Common Problems
Cheap to buy and run, but cold-start rattle is a deal-breaker
The Ibiza 6L with the 1.2 three-cylinder is an extremely affordable car to own when everything works. The biggest concern is the timing chain tensioner, which is a well-documented weakness of this engine family across VAG Group models. A cold-start rattle lasting more than a second or two should be treated as a walk-away signal, as chain skip can destroy the engine. Bore wear and oil consumption are secondary concerns that mainly affect neglected or very high-mileage examples. Electrical niggles (coils, window regulators, boot lock) are common but inexpensive to fix. At this price point, the key buying strategy is to find a well-maintained example with a quiet engine rather than spending money repairing a troubled one.
