The entry-level SEAT Leon Mk1 with the 1.4 16V engine shares its platform and powertrain with the Volkswagen Golf Mk4. Built in Martorell, Spain, it offered a sportier look and slightly lower pricing than the Golf while using the same reliable VW Group components. The 75 hp output is modest but adequate for city driving. At 20+ years old, rust and age-related electrical failures matter more than engine problems.· more· less

Buy if: You want a cheap, simple hatchback with VW Group parts availability and can find one with solid bodywork and documented timing belt history.
Avoid if: You cannot inspect the sills and arches thoroughly for rust, or the car shows damp footwells indicating water ingress problems.

Common Problems
Simple engine, but age-related issues dominate
The 1.4 16V engine is fundamentally straightforward with no turbocharger or direct injection to complicate matters. At 20+ years old, body corrosion and water ingress are the primary concerns and often determine whether a car is worth keeping. Electrical items (ABS module, coil packs, window regulators) fail predictably but have well-understood and affordable repair solutions. The later BCA engine code (2001 onwards) is more reliable than the earlier AHW/AKQ/APE variants. Any Mk1 Leon with dry footwells, solid bodywork, and documented service history can still provide affordable transport.

SEAT Leon Mk2 1.4 2005-2012
Next generation with improved build quality. Same water ingress tendency and ABS module issues, but better interior and more power (85 hp).
