2019-2024 · 2.0 TDI EA288 (150/200 hp) 4-cylinder turbocharged diesel

SEAT's largest SUV, built on the Volkswagen MQB platform shared with the Skoda Kodiaq and VW Tiguan Allspace. The 2.0 TDI uses the well-proven EA288 diesel engine in 150 or 200 hp form, offering strong torque and reasonable fuel economy. Production ended in mid-2024 with no successor planned, replaced in SEAT's lineup by the Cupra Terramar.

Spacious 7-seat option available Proven EA288 diesel engine
DSG mechatronics prone to failure Higher fault rate than platform siblings
Buy if: You want a spacious family SUV for regular motorway driving and can find one with a complete service history including DSG oil changes.
Avoid if: You mostly drive short urban trips (DPF and EGR will suffer) or want a trouble-free automatic gearbox experience.

Common Problems
Proven diesel engine, but aftertreatment and DSG need monitoring
The EA288 2.0 TDI is fundamentally robust and shared across millions of Volkswagen Group vehicles. Most Tarracos cover high mileages without major engine failures. The main ownership risks are the exhaust aftertreatment system (DPF, EGR, AdBlue) and, for DSG-equipped cars, the mechatronic unit. What Car? reliability surveys found 44% of Tarraco owners reported faults, higher than the Skoda Kodiaq despite being mechanically identical. Many of these faults are minor electrical and infotainment issues rather than serious mechanical failures. Manual gearbox versions with regular motorway use represent the lowest-risk purchase.
Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Left front seat mounting cracks reducing crash protection (2019 production) Critical - verify completed
Brake pedal plate welding defect, may detach (2020-2021 production) Critical - verify completed
Fuel tank wall insufficient thickness (2020 production) Verify completed
Rear left door insufficient impact absorption (2020 production) Verify completed
Engine design cover may loosen during sporty driving (2020-2022 production) Verify completed
Engine providing too little torque at low speeds - software update (2018-2019 production) Verify completed
Infotainment system software update recall (various model years) Verify completed
The SEAT Tarraco has had several safety recalls affecting different model years. Contact a SEAT dealer with the VIN to verify all applicable recalls have been completed. The brake pedal welding defect and seat mounting recalls are particularly safety-critical.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on most used Tarracos
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Active on all Tarracos (2019-2024 production)
Extended warranty Available through SEAT dealers, typically 1-2 years
SEAT's standard EU factory warranty is 2 years with no mileage limit. All 2019-2022 Tarracos are now outside their original warranty period. The 12-year rust perforation warranty remains active on all examples. Extended warranty plans are available through SEAT dealers and are worth considering given potential DSG and emission system costs.

↔ Also consider

SEAT Tarraco 1.5 TSI 2019-2024 Petrol version. No DPF, EGR, or AdBlue concerns, but has ACT kangarooing on manuals and less torque for a heavy SUV. Skoda Kodiaq 2.0 TDI 2016-2024 Same EA288 engine and MQB platform. Similar issues but generally better reliability reputation and stronger residuals. SEAT Ateca 2.0 TDI 2016-present Same engine in a smaller body. Identical diesel and DSG issues but lighter, cheaper to run, and no 7-seat option. SEAT Alhambra 2.0 TDI Mk2 2010-2020 Previous 7-seat SEAT with same engine family. Sliding door issues add complexity but proven over a longer production run. Dacia Duster 1.5 dCi 2010-2018 Much cheaper SUV alternative. Simpler technology means fewer electronic issues but less refined and smaller cabin.
