The Hyundai i40 was Hyundai's dedicated European D-segment car, designed at the company's Rüsselsheim center and available as a sedan or Tourer estate. The 1.7 CRDi diesel was the volume engine, offering competitive fuel economy for motorway and long-distance commuters. Priced well below German alternatives and backed by a 5-year factory warranty, it appealed to fleet buyers and families who wanted D-segment space without premium-brand costs.· more· less

Common Problems
Reliable when maintained, but sensitive to short trips
The D4FD 1.7 CRDi engine is fundamentally robust and can reach 200,000+ km with proper care. The main concerns are typical diesel issues that become worse with predominantly short-trip driving: DPF clogging, EGR carbon buildup, and diesel dilution. Timing chain wear is a concern at higher mileages, mainly affecting 2013+ models. Manual gearbox versions are significantly more reliable than DCT automatic cars. Service history and driving pattern matter more than mileage alone for this engine.
