The first-generation i30 with the larger 2.0 CRDi D4EA diesel was the performance diesel in the FD lineup, offering 140 hp and 305 Nm of torque. Built in the Czech Republic alongside the Kia Ceed, the D4EA is a VM Motori-derived engine also used in the Santa Fe and Tucson. Unlike the 1.6 CRDi (which uses a timing chain), the 2.0 CRDi uses a timing belt that requires scheduled replacement. Parts are affordable and widely available across Europe.· more· less

Strong torque, relaxed motorway cruiser Affordable parts, wide availability
Timing belt needs scheduled replacement EGR and DPF issues on short trips
Buy if: You want an affordable, torquey diesel compact with documented service history showing timing belt replacement and mostly motorway use.
Avoid if: The timing belt replacement history is unclear, or the car was primarily used for short urban trips where DPF and EGR problems are common.

Common Problems
Affordable and reasonably robust, but requires consistent long-distance use
The D4EA 2.0 CRDi is a fundamentally durable engine that can reach 300,000+ km with proper maintenance. The main concerns are typical of older diesels in this segment: emissions equipment (EGR, DPF) fouling from short-trip use, and age-related wear on the steering column coupler. The timing belt requires scheduled replacement (unlike the 1.6 CRDi's chain), which adds a fixed maintenance cost. Cars with documented motorway use, regular oil changes, and a confirmed timing belt history are significantly lower risk.

General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Steering column universal joint bolt loosening (April 2007 - May 2012 production) Critical - verify completed
ABS/ESC module electrical short circuit risk (May 2007 - May 2012 production) Verify completed
Airbag control unit (ACU) inadvertent deployment risk (2007-2012 production) Verify completed
Front seat belt tensioner defect (2007-2012 production) Verify completed
Contact Hyundai with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The steering column bolt recall is particularly important for safety, as bolt loosening can cause complete loss of steering.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (5 years / unlimited km) Expired on all FD models
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Expired or expiring 2019-2022
Extended warranty availability Third-party only at this age
All first-generation i30 models are well outside their original 5-year factory warranty. Hyundai's 12-year rust perforation warranty has also expired for most examples. Third-party warranty products may be available but often exclude pre-existing conditions on cars of this age.

Petrol alternative avoids all diesel-specific issues. Timing chain tensioner problems are the main concern on the G4FC engine.
