Hyundai i20 BC3 1.2

2020-presentLast reviewed: April 2026 · How this report is builtApril 2026

2020-present · 1.2 MPI Smartstream/Kappa naturally aspirated petrol (84 hp)

Third-generation supermini launched in 2020, sold across Europe as a value-focused alternative to the Polo, Clio and Fiesta. The 1.2 MPI is the simplest engine in the range: naturally aspirated, four-cylinder, no turbo, no particulate filter complications, and only available with a five-speed manual. It is the cheapest i20 to buy and run, with strong owner satisfaction and a long Hyundai factory warranty that on early cars may still be active.

Simple non-turbo engine Long 5-year Hyundai warranty
Clutch slave cylinder weakness Underpowered for motorway use
Buy if: You want a low-cost, low-stress city car with a simple petrol engine and the safety net of remaining Hyundai factory warranty.
Avoid if: You need an automatic gearbox, frequently drive on motorways with a full load, or test-drive one with clutch judder or a sticking pedal.

Common Problems
One of the safer used buys in this segment
The i20 BC3 1.2 is mechanically straightforward and ranks well in owner reliability surveys. There are no major engine, gearbox or emissions-system weaknesses to worry about — the most common issues are the hydraulic clutch on higher-mileage cars, AC quirks, and early-build infotainment bugs that a software update normally fixes. Combined with the remaining Hyundai factory warranty on most examples, total cost of ownership is genuinely low for a modern European supermini.
Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
eCall VIN registration issue (early 2020 BC3 production) Verify completed via VIN check
DCT gearbox software (2023-2024) — does not apply to 1.2 MPI manual but worth confirming Not applicable to manual 1.2
Contact a Hyundai dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The 1.2 MPI is manual-only, so the 2023-2024 DCT recall does not apply, but it is still worth confirming the car has had any free software updates done.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (5 years / unlimited km) Often still active on 2020-2023 cars
Anti-perforation warranty 12 years on bodywork
Paint warranty 3 years
Hyundai's 5-year unlimited-km warranty is one of the strongest in the segment. The clock starts from first registration, transfers between owners, but requires servicing on schedule. Confirm with a Hyundai dealer using the VIN exactly how much warranty time is left and that no service intervals have been skipped.

↔ Also consider

Hyundai i20 1.2 2014-2020 Previous-generation i20 with a very similar 1.2 NA petrol. Slightly less refined but mechanically simple, well-proven long-term and with the same Hyundai 5-year warranty absorbing most big-ticket issues. Volkswagen Polo Mk6 1.0 TSI 2017-present Premium-feel B-segment rival with a turbocharged 3-cylinder. More refined than the NA i20 1.2 but adds turbo, timing-chain and DSG complexity that push running costs higher. Ford Fiesta Mk8 1.0 EcoBoost 2017-2023 Direct B-segment rival with a turbocharged 3-cylinder. Sharper drive than the i20, but EcoBoost wet-belt and coolant issues are a far bigger risk than the simple NA i20 1.2. Toyota Yaris XP210 Hybrid 2020-present Hybrid-only rival with Toyota's proven self-charging system. Lower fuel bills and legendary reliability, but higher purchase price and more complex powertrain than the simple i20 1.2. Hyundai i10 PA 1.0 2019-present Smaller Hyundai city car sibling. Even lower running costs and insurance, but noticeably less space and motorway refinement. Similar reliability profile from the Kappa engine family.
