The first-generation i30 was Hyundai's credible entry into the European compact segment, built in the Czech Republic alongside the Kia Ceed. The 1.6 CRDi D4FB diesel offers good fuel economy and came with a five-year unlimited-mileage warranty that was class-leading at launch. By today's standards it is a simple, affordable diesel hatchback with reasonable parts availability across Europe.· more· less

Common Problems
Affordable and generally reliable, but needs consistent highway use
The D4FB 1.6 CRDi is a reasonably robust engine that can exceed 250,000 km with proper maintenance. The main risks are typical of older small diesels: emissions equipment (EGR, DPF) clogging from short-trip driving, and age-related wear on the steering column and flywheel. Cars with documented motorway use and regular oil changes are significantly less likely to present expensive problems. The timing chain is generally long-lived if oil maintenance is respected.
