The first-generation i20 with the 1.4 CRDi diesel was Hyundai's entry into the frugal European supermini diesel market. The D4FC engine is a chain-driven four-cylinder producing 75 or 90 hp, known for excellent fuel economy (4.0-5.0 l/100 km real-world) and low running costs. It came with a 6-speed manual gearbox and Hyundai's 5-year EU warranty. Parts are affordable and widely available across Europe.· more· less

DPF clogs on short-trip driving Clutch wears prematurely on diesel
Buy if: You cover regular mixed or motorway journeys and can find one with full service history and no cold-start rattle.
Avoid if: You mainly drive short urban trips under 15 km, as the DPF and EGR will clog and repair costs will exceed the car's value.

Common Problems
Reliable diesel supermini, but needs motorway driving to stay healthy
The D4FC 1.4 CRDi is a fundamentally sound engine with no major design defects. The timing chain eliminates belt replacement costs. However, like all small diesels used in city cars, it depends heavily on driving patterns. Regular motorway use keeps the DPF and EGR healthy. Cars that have been used exclusively for short trips are significantly more likely to need expensive emissions-related repairs. With proper driving patterns and regular servicing, the i20 1.4 CRDi can comfortably exceed 200,000 km.

General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
12V socket overheating / fire risk (2008-2012 models) Verify completed
Takata airbag inflator (if applicable to production date) Verify if applicable
Contact a Hyundai dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The 12V socket recall is particularly important for cars built between 2008 and 2012. Note: Hyundai states they do not use Takata airbags, but some markets have flagged certain production runs. Confirm directly with Hyundai.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (5 years / unlimited km) Expired on all PB generation models
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) May still apply to 2014 models until 2026
All first-generation i20 PB models are outside their original 5-year factory warranty. The 12-year rust perforation warranty may still cover the latest 2014 production cars. No Hyundai extended warranty programme is available for vehicles this old.
