Sporty-styled trim of the third-generation i20, sitting below the full-fat i20 N in the range. Uses the 1.0 T-GDI three-cylinder with 48V mild-hybrid assist, available with 6-speed manual (iMT on some markets) or 7-speed dual-clutch. Generous equipment, Hyundai's 5-year unlimited-km warranty on new cars, and relatively modest running costs make it a popular first-car and city commuter. Most examples are still young enough that long-term wear patterns are only beginning to emerge.

Common Problems
Recall on cars built Aug 2021 - Jan 2023 for faulty HPFP that can fail and leave the car stranded · more· less
Hyundai issued a worldwide fuel-pump recall covering i20s (including N Line) and i20 N built between roughly 27 August 2021 and 4 January 2023. The high-pressure fuel pump can develop an internal fault causing long cranking, stalling, limp mode or complete no-start. Dealer replacement is free of charge under the recall. Out of warranty, a HPFP replacement runs €400-600 in parts plus 2-3 hours labor. When viewing an N Line, use the VIN to confirm the recall has been performed; many owner-forum threads report multi-week wait times for parts, and cars bought privately often have the recall still open.
Low-speed shunt, clutch judder and software updates are widely reported on DCT-equipped cars · more· less
The 7-speed dry dual-clutch gearbox is tuned for economy rather than sportiness and is frequently criticised for low-speed hesitation, jerky creep and occasional clutch judder when cold or in traffic. Many cases are resolved by a free software update at a dealer (TCU reflash), covered under warranty. A 2024 recall (KBA code 41DT05 / Hyundai campaign) covered BC3 i20 and Bayon cars built 28 March 2023 - 15 January 2024 for a TCU fault that could cause unintended deceleration; software update is the fix. If the symptoms persist after the update, clutch pack and mechatronic repairs out of warranty typically run €1,500-2,500. Manual/iMT cars avoid this risk entirely.
ISG and coasting functions disable themselves, "Check 48V battery" warnings on cars 3-4 years old · more· less
The 48V mild-hybrid system uses a belt-driven starter/generator and a small lithium-ion pack in addition to the normal 12V battery. Owners on Hyundai forums report that Idle Stop & Go and coasting features stop working, often with a dashboard warning, and that dealers find the auxiliary battery sitting at 70-80% state of charge. Short-trip urban use accelerates the problem. A 12V battery replacement is €150-250; a 48V lithium pack and BSG work, if needed, can reach €1,000-1,200 at a dealer. Most cases so far have been resolved under Hyundai's 5-year warranty.
Brief cold-start rattle on the Kappa G3LC family, less frequent on BC3 than on older GB i20s · more· less
The Kappa 1.0 T-GDI three-cylinder used across i20/Kona/i30 has a history of tensioner wear causing a 1-3 second rattle on cold start. Hyundai updated tensioner part numbers on later production, and BC3 N Line cars have so far shown fewer cases than the preceding GB generation. When it does occur it is typically after 60,000-90,000 km and is worse on cars that see mainly short trips with long oil-change intervals. Full chain, guide and tensioner kit runs €800-1,200 at a specialist or €1,400-1,600 at a franchised dealer. On a pre-purchase inspection, start the engine from completely cold and listen for any rattle in the first 5 seconds.
Touchscreen lockups, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto dropouts, most fixed by software updates · more· less
The 8-inch and 10.25-inch infotainment units fitted to BC3 N Line suffer periodic freezes, black screens on start-up, and wired CarPlay/Android Auto dropouts. Dealer software updates resolve most cases, and units remain covered by Hyundai's 5-year warranty. Out of warranty, a head-unit replacement is €400-500. Confirm all software updates have been applied during a pre-purchase inspection and test every function, including rear camera and Bluetooth, during the test drive.
Front bumper and bonnet paint is thin and chips easily, more noticeable on darker colours · more· less
A recurring complaint across BC3 i20 and i20 N owners is that the paint is on the thin side, particularly on the front bumper, leading edge of the bonnet and rear arches. Stone chips appear early in ownership and touch-up pens or smart repairs are commonly needed. Factor €150-300 for touch-up work or €500-800 for a full bumper respray. Not a reliability issue but something to inspect closely on a used example, especially one used on motorways.
Young platform with mostly warranty-covered niggles
Most BC3 N Line cars are still inside the 5-year Hyundai warranty, which covers the main risk items - fuel pump recall, DCT software, 48V system and infotainment. Long-term wear patterns on the 1.0 T-GDI and 7DCT are still emerging, but early indicators are better than the older GB generation. The safest examples are manual/iMT cars with the fuel pump recall completed and full service history at a Hyundai dealer.
