The first-generation Hyundai i30 marked the brand's arrival as a credible alternative to European compacts like the Golf and Focus. The 1.6 G4FC is the more powerful petrol option in the FD lineup, offering 122 hp and adequate performance for mixed driving. Parts are inexpensive and widely available across Europe, and the original 5-year warranty was generous for its era. At this age, condition and maintenance history matter far more than mileage alone.· more· less

Buy if: You want a budget-friendly compact with cheap running costs and can verify the ABS module recall has been completed.
Avoid if: You need the 4-speed automatic (shift quality degrades early) or cannot tolerate an older car that needs occasional attention to oil level and minor wear items.

Common Problems
Affordable and mostly dependable, with age-related wear items
The i30 FD 1.6 is a practical budget car with no catastrophic failure modes when properly maintained. The G4FC engine uses a timing chain (no scheduled belt replacement) and can reach 200,000+ km with regular oil changes. The most common complaints are the steering coupling knock, engine mounts, and valve cover gasket. Oil consumption should be monitored at higher mileages, as the aluminium block is not rebuildable. The ABS module recall is the most critical item to verify before purchase. With the recalls completed and a documented service history, this is one of the cheaper cars to keep running in its class.

General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
ABS/ESC module fire risk (electrical short circuit from moisture ingress, Nov 2006 - Dec 2010 production) Critical - verify completed
Steering column universal joint bolt loosening (potential loss of steering, Apr 2007 - Mar 2008) Critical - verify completed
Airbag control unit reprogramming (inadvertent deployment risk from impact on lower body, May 2007 - May 2012) Verify completed
Motor driven power steering loss (MDPS power loss requiring increased steering effort, Nov 2009 - Apr 2010) Verify completed
Brake light switch connection failure (delayed or absent brake light illumination during braking) Verify completed
ESC malfunction from moisture ingress (short circuit disabling stability control, Dec 2010 - Mar 2012) Verify completed
The i30 FD has multiple recall campaigns. The ABS module fire risk and steering column bolt recalls are the most critical. Do not purchase without verifying these are completed. Contact a Hyundai dealer with the VIN to check all recall statuses. Recall work is free regardless of the vehicle's age or mileage.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (5 years / unlimited km) Expired on all FD models
Perforation corrosion warranty 12 years from first registration
Paint warranty 5 years - expired on all models
All i30 FD models are well outside their original 5-year factory warranty. Some early models (2007-2008) have also exceeded the 12-year perforation corrosion warranty. Later 2010-2011 models may still be within the perforation warranty until 2022-2023. Extended warranty options through third-party providers may be available but are rarely cost-effective on cars of this value.
