Tesla's large electric SUV with signature falcon wing rear doors, offered as the "Long Range" variant from mid-2019 with the Raven drivetrain update. The Raven brought a more efficient permanent magnet front motor, adaptive air suspension, and improved range over the earlier 75D/100D models. The 100 kWh battery paired with dual motors delivers roughly 500 km of WLTP range. Mechanically simpler than an ICE SUV, but the falcon wing doors, air suspension, self-presenting front door handles, and large panoramic windshield add layers of complexity that drive up potential repair costs.· more· less

Common Problems
Complex systems push risk above typical EVs
The Tesla Model X Long Range pre-refresh has a robust electric drivetrain backed by an 8-year warranty, and the Raven update (mid-2019) improved the motors and suspension over earlier variants. However, the falcon wing doors, air suspension, self-presenting door handles, and large panoramic windshield create multiple failure points that simpler EVs avoid entirely. Earlier 2016-2018 Model X cars also face the MCU1 eMMC recall. The most expensive potential repairs involve the air suspension (up to €5,000 for multiple corners) and falcon wing door mechanisms (up to €3,500 per door). Budget conservatively and verify that all recalls have been addressed before purchase.

The pre-refresh Tesla Model X has accumulated a significant number of recalls over its production run. The MCU1 eMMC recall is the most critical for 2016-2018 cars, as it affects the central touchscreen that controls most vehicle functions including the backup camera and climate. Most software-related recalls can be resolved via over-the-air updates, but the seat latch and roof applique recalls require physical inspection. Use Tesla's VIN recall search at tesla.com/support/annual-and-recall-service to verify all applicable recalls are completed.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (4 years / 80,000 km) Expired on all pre-refresh cars
Battery and drivetrain (8 years / 240,000 km) May still be active on 2019-2021 Raven cars, 70% capacity guarantee
Body rust perforation (12 years / unlimited km) Active on most pre-refresh cars
The 8-year battery and drivetrain warranty is the most valuable remaining coverage. It covers the high-voltage battery, drive motors, and associated components with a 70% minimum capacity retention guarantee. All pre-refresh Model X cars are outside their 4-year basic warranty. Tesla does not offer extended warranty purchases for used vehicles bought from private sellers. The falcon wing doors and air suspension are NOT covered by the drivetrain warranty.
