Tesla's full-size electric SUV with signature falcon wing rear doors, introduced in late 2015. The 90D uses a 90 kWh battery paired with dual motors for all-wheel drive, delivering roughly 380 km of real-world range. As an early-production Model X, build quality varies widely between individual cars, and the falcon wing doors plus air suspension add mechanical complexity that simpler Teslas avoid. The 90D was produced only in 2016 and the first half of 2017 before being replaced by the 100D.· more· less

Common Problems
Complex early EV with several known weak points
The Tesla Model X 90D is mechanically simpler than an ICE SUV in terms of the drivetrain, but the falcon wing doors, air suspension, MCU1 touchscreen, and early-production build quality add significant ownership risk. The 90 kWh battery pack degrades faster than other Tesla packs, though it typically stabilizes at an acceptable level. Most of the highest-cost items (MCU1 eMMC, power steering bolts) are covered by recalls. The biggest out-of-pocket risks are the falcon wing door mechanisms and air suspension, which can each cost several thousand euros to repair. Budget for a well-maintained example with all recalls completed and expect to replace the 12V battery every 3-5 years.

General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
MCU1 8GB eMMC flash memory failure (all pre-March 2018 Model S/X) Critical - verify completed
Power steering bolt corrosion (Model X built before Oct 2016) Verify completed
Second-row fold-flat seat latch cable adjustment (Oct 2016 - Aug 2017) Verify completed
Third-row seat back may move forward in collision (early 2016 Model X) Verify completed
Rearview camera display delay (Autopilot Computer 2.5 equipped vehicles) Verify if applicable
Full Self-Driving Beta software recall (2016+ Model X with FSD) Verify if applicable
The pre-refresh Model X has numerous recalls. The MCU1 eMMC and power steering bolt recalls are the most critical. Use Tesla's VIN recall search at tesla.com/support/annual-and-recall-service to verify all applicable recalls are completed before purchase. If the MCU1 eMMC has not been replaced, Tesla will do this free of charge.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (4 years / 80,000 km) Expired on all 2016-2017 cars
Battery and drivetrain (8 years / unlimited km) Expired or expiring on 2016 cars, may remain on late 2017 cars
Body rust perforation (12 years / unlimited km) Active until 2028-2029
The 8-year battery and drivetrain warranty is the most valuable coverage remaining on used examples. It covers the high-voltage battery, drive motors, and associated components with a 70% minimum capacity retention guarantee. For 2016 cars, this warranty expired or is expiring in 2024-2025. For 2017 cars, coverage extends into 2025. The basic 4-year warranty is long expired. Tesla does not offer extended warranty purchases for used vehicles bought from private sellers.
