Tesla's flagship performance sedan and one of the fastest production cars ever made. The tri-motor Plaid delivers supercar acceleration with 1,020 hp and a sub-2.1-second 0-100 km/h time. It pairs a 100 kWh battery with air suspension and a minimalist interior centered around a 17-inch touchscreen. Build quality varies between individual cars, and the unique half-shaft geometry leads to documented driveline vibration issues. A serious contender if you can accept Tesla's unconventional ownership model.
Unmatched straight-line performance
Low routine maintenance costs
Half-shaft vibration/shudder issue
Rapid inner rear tire wear (21-inch)
Buy if: You want extreme performance in a practical sedan and can source one with clean service history and no outstanding recalls.
Avoid if: You expect luxury-grade build quality and quiet refinement, or you are not prepared for expensive 21-inch performance tires wearing unevenly.

Common Problems
Front half-shafts operate at a steep angle, causing vibration at 50-70 km/h under acceleration · more· less
This is one of the most discussed Model S Plaid issues. The front motor sits low while the wheels are higher, creating a steep CV joint angle at normal ride height. This causes a noticeable shudder when accelerating through approximately 50-70 km/h. Tesla issued service bulletin SB-21-39-001 with updated half-shaft part numbers, but the underlying geometry issue means replacements may only last 15,000-25,000 km before the vibration returns. Tesla has at times classified this as a normal characteristic of the Plaid. Aftermarket solutions include lowering link kits that reduce the half-shaft angle. Replacement under warranty is possible, but out-of-warranty half-shaft replacement runs approximately €1,500-3,000 including labor.
Aggressive negative rear camber destroys inner tire edges, especially on 21-inch fitment · more· less
The 2021+ Model S and Plaid run more negative rear camber than their predecessors, and this gets worse when the air suspension lowers at highway speeds. On 21-inch staggered wheels (265/35R21 front, 295/30R21 rear), rear tires can wear out in as little as 10,000-15,000 km with the inner shoulder completely gone while the outer tread is still good. A full set of Michelin Pilot Sport 4S in these sizes costs approximately €1,200-1,600 in Europe. Aftermarket camber shim kits (approximately €200-300 installed) reduce camber by 1.0-1.5 degrees and significantly extend tire life. On 19-inch wheels, the issue is less severe. This is not a defect per se but a design choice that Tesla has not addressed, and it adds significantly to running costs on the 21-inch setup.
12V battery drains and dies, rendering the car completely unresponsive · more· less
The Model S Plaid relies on a 12V battery for all accessory systems, door handles, and the main contactors that connect the high-voltage battery. When the 12V battery fails, the car becomes completely dead: door handles do not present, the touchscreen is blank, and the car cannot enter tow mode. Towing to a Tesla service center is required. Forum polls suggest over 75% of Model S owners have experienced a 12V battery replacement within the first 2 years. The 2021+ refresh uses a lithium 12V battery (part number 1137234-00-A) which is more reliable than earlier lead-acid versions, but failures still occur. Replacement cost is approximately €200-350 for the battery plus labor, or €400-500 at Tesla service. A trickle charger is not practical since the 12V battery is inside the car.
Air springs can develop leaks, compressor may overheat from compensating · more· less
The adaptive air suspension on the Model S Plaid uses air springs at all four corners with an electric compressor. Air spring leaks typically develop after 60,000-100,000 km, often at the rubber bellow seals. A leaking air spring causes the car to sag on one corner, and the compressor works overtime to compensate, eventually overheating or failing itself. Individual air spring replacement costs approximately €800-1,500 per corner at Tesla service. The compressor alone is approximately €500-800. In worst cases, owners have been quoted €4,000-5,000 for multiple corners plus the compressor. Third-party air suspension parts are becoming available at lower prices.
Interior rattles, misaligned panels, loose trim, and uneven gaps documented across production · more· less
Build quality varies significantly between individual Plaids. Common reports include: rear passenger seat rattle, creaking from the front suspension over bumps, loose interior door trim, frameless door wind noise, and uneven exterior panel gaps. The yoke steering wheel cover has been reported to peel at low mileage. Some owners report no issues at all, while others require multiple service visits. Tesla service can address many of these under warranty, but out-of-warranty trim and cosmetic repairs add up. A thorough pre-purchase inspection is essential to identify a well-built example versus a problematic one.
Electronic expansion valve sticks open, disabling cabin heating below freezing · more· less
In early 2022, Tesla recalled over 26,000 Model S, X, 3, and Y vehicles (2021-2022 model years) for a heat pump software issue. The electronic expansion valve could remain open if communication was interrupted, trapping refrigerant and causing the compressor to shut down. The result is no cabin heating in cold weather. Tesla addressed this with a firmware update (version 2021.44.30.7 and later), but some owners reported the problem recurring. If the issue persists after the software update, hardware replacement of the expansion valve or compressor may be needed. Parts and labor for a compressor replacement run approximately €1,000-2,000.
Impressive powertrain reliability offset by chassis and build quality concerns
The tri-motor drivetrain itself is proving robust, and catastrophic battery or motor failures are rare within the 8-year warranty period. The main ownership concerns are mechanical: half-shaft vibration from aggressive suspension geometry, accelerated tire wear on 21-inch wheels, and air suspension wear over time. Build quality inconsistency means some owners have trouble-free experiences while others face recurring trim and rattle issues. Budget for expensive performance tires and keep the air suspension in good condition.
