Tesla Model X Long Range

The falcon wing doors rely on multiple ultrasonic sensors and electromechanical actuators per door. Sensors are one-time-use components that cannot be recalibrated once removed. Common symptoms include doors refusing to open fully, stopping halfway, or failing to detect obstacles correctly. Tesla has improved the design over the years, and the 2021+ refresh is more reliable than earlier cars, but the fundamental complexity remains. A single sensor replacement typically costs €300-500 including labor. If the entire door electromechanical controller module fails, replacement runs €800-1,500 per door. In cases requiring full door assembly work (such as after impact or multiple failed components), costs can reach €3,500 per door. Many owners report intermittent door issues that resolve with software updates or recalibration, while others face recurring mechanical failures requiring parts replacement.

The Model X uses adaptive air suspension with air springs at all four corners and an electric compressor. Air spring leaks typically develop after 60,000-100,000 km, usually at the rubber bellow seals. A leaking air spring causes the car to sag on one corner, and the compressor runs overtime to compensate, eventually overheating or failing. Individual air spring replacement costs approximately €800-1,500 per corner at Tesla service. The compressor alone is approximately €500-1,000 including labor. In worst cases with multiple corners plus compressor, owners have been quoted €4,000-5,000. Third-party air suspension components are becoming available at lower cost. The Model X's higher weight compared to the Model S (approximately 2,400 kg) accelerates wear on these components.

Tesla Service Bulletin SB-24-32-005 acknowledges this as a known defect on Model S and Model X vehicles built between February 2021 and January 2024. The synthetic vegan leather material on the yoke (or round steering wheel, on later cars) bubbles, flakes, and peels. This can begin as early as 10,000-15,000 km of use. Under warranty, Tesla replaces the yoke assembly including a new airbag at no cost. The replacement now uses a mechanical horn button design. Out of warranty, replacement costs €800-1,200 at Tesla service. Aftermarket steering wheel wraps in leather or Alcantara are available for €40-160 as a cosmetic fix. While purely cosmetic, it affects daily usability and resale value.

The Model X relies on a 12V battery for all accessory systems, door mechanisms (including falcon wing doors), and the main contactors that connect the high-voltage battery. When the 12V battery fails, the car becomes completely dead: doors will not open, the touchscreen is blank, and the car cannot charge. The 2021+ refresh uses a lithium-ion 12V battery which is more reliable than the earlier lead-acid versions, but failures still occur. Replacement cost is approximately €200-350 for the battery plus labor, or €400-500 at Tesla service. The DC-DC converter that charges the 12V system from the main battery can also malfunction, causing repeated 12V battery drain. If the DC-DC converter itself fails, the repair is more involved at €800-1,200.

The 2021+ Model X uses a heat pump for cabin heating, which is more efficient but more complex than the resistive heater used in pre-refresh cars. A recall (covering certain 2021-2022 vehicles) addressed a software issue where the Electronic Expansion Valve could get stuck open, trapping refrigerant and shutting down the compressor. This was resolved via OTA update. However, hardware failures of the compressor, refrigerant pressure/temperature sensors, and the thermal management valve (similar to the octovalve on Model 3/Y) can still occur. The heat pump compressor replacement runs €1,200-2,000 at Tesla. Sensor replacements are approximately €400-800 for a full set of three P/T sensors plus system evacuation and recharge. These failures primarily manifest in cold weather (below -10 degrees C) as a complete loss of cabin heat.

Consumer Reports gave the 2022 Model X a reliability score of just 14 out of 100, and build quality is a persistent complaint. Common reports include: uneven exterior panel gaps (particularly around the falcon wing doors), interior rattles from the B-pillar area and rear hatch, loose interior door trim, wind noise from frameless front door seals, and seat rail rattles. Build quality varies significantly between individual cars. Some owners report no issues while others require multiple service visits. Tesla service can address many issues under warranty with trim clips, foam inserts, and panel adjustments. Out of warranty, cosmetic and NVH fixes add up at €200-500 per visit. Thorough pre-purchase inspection is essential to identify a well-built example.

The Model X runs more negative rear camber than most SUVs, and the air suspension lowering at highway speed makes it worse. On 22-inch wheels (265/35R22 front, 285/35R22 rear), rear tires can wear out in as little as 15,000-25,000 km with the inner shoulder completely bald while outer tread remains good. A full set of 22-inch tires costs approximately €1,200-1,800 in Europe. On 20-inch wheels (265/45R20 front, 275/45R20 rear), wear is less severe and tires typically last 30,000-40,000 km. Tesla does not offer camber adjustment from the factory. Aftermarket camber shim kits (€200-300 installed) can reduce camber by 1.0-1.5 degrees and significantly extend tire life. Regular rotation every 10,000 km as Tesla recommends helps equalize wear but does not eliminate the inner-edge problem.
