Tesla's first SUV and one of the most distinctive electric vehicles ever made. The P100D is the high-performance variant with Ludicrous Mode, delivering 0-100 km/h in 3.1 seconds from a 2.5-tonne SUV. The pre-refresh generation (before the 2021 Palladium redesign) features MCU1 on cars built before March 2018 and the original air suspension setup replaced by Raven hardware from April 2019. Falcon wing doors remain the defining feature and the primary ownership concern.· more· less

Falcon wing doors add complexity MCU1 eMMC failure on pre-2018 cars
Buy if: You want ludicrous performance in an electric SUV and can find a post-2018 car with MCU2 and confirmed recall completion.
Avoid if: You need rock-solid daily reliability from every door and window, or you cannot budget for potential air suspension and door mechanism repairs in the four-figure range.

Common Problems
Complex EV with known weak points, especially doors and electronics
The pre-refresh Model X P100D is mechanically simpler than an equivalent combustion SUV in terms of engine and transmission, but adds its own complexity through falcon wing doors, air suspension, and MCU1 electronics. The drive units and 100 kWh battery pack are generally robust, with most packs retaining roughly 88% capacity at 200,000 km. However, the door mechanisms, eMMC flash memory (pre-2018), air suspension, and HVAC compressor represent significant potential repair costs. Post-2018 cars with MCU2 eliminate the most common electronics failure. A thorough pre-purchase inspection focusing on door operation, suspension behavior, and touchscreen responsiveness is essential.

Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
8GB eMMC flash memory failure affecting touchscreen, rearview camera, and climate controls (2016-2018 with MCU1) Critical - verify completed
Roof trim adhesion failure, trim may separate while driving (2015-2016 production, through July 2016) Verify completed
Second-row reclining seat back latch cables improperly adjusted (Oct 2016 - Sep 2017) Verify completed
Third-row seat back locking hinge failure (early production, pre-March 2016) Verify completed
Rearview camera image delay on AP2.5 equipped vehicles (2018-2019) Verify completed
Front suspension lateral link may fracture from corrosion or impact damage (2016-2021) Verify completed
Hood latch may not detect an unlatched secondary hood latch (2021 OTA fix, applies to some pre-refresh cars) Verify completed
Contact Tesla with the VIN to verify all open recalls and service campaigns. The eMMC recall (MCU1, pre-March 2018 cars) is particularly important as it affects safety-critical functions including the rearview camera.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (4 years / 80,000 km) Expired on all pre-refresh models
Battery and drivetrain (8 years / unlimited km) May still apply on 2018-2019 cars until 2026-2027
Battery capacity guarantee 70% capacity retention within warranty period
Tesla's factory warranty is 4 years / 80,000 km for the vehicle and 8 years / unlimited km for the battery and drivetrain. All pre-refresh Model X cars are outside the basic 4-year warranty. The 8-year battery/drivetrain warranty may still cover 2018-2019 production cars through 2026-2027. The eMMC recall remedy is separate from warranty and should be performed regardless of warranty status.
