Seat Leon Mk4 2.0 TDI

Last updated: February 2026

2020-present · EA288 evo 2.0 TDI diesel (150 hp)

Practical and affordable compact hatchback sharing platform and powertrain with VW Golf Mk8 and Skoda Octavia. The EA288 evo engine is one of VW Group's most refined diesels with improved emissions control, but DPF regeneration remains critical for city drivers. Main concerns are the infotainment system (early models had serious software bugs requiring recalls), DSG mechatronic failures on automatic versions, and typical modern diesel issues like EGR valve clogging and AdBlue system faults. Manual gearbox versions are significantly more reliable than DSG. Multiple recalls issued for airbag wiring, engine mounts, and brake fluid reservoir heat shield.

What Can Break bars = likelihood
Reasonable reliability for modern diesel, but software and DSG are weak points
The EA288 evo engine itself is one of VW Group's most refined and reliable diesels when properly maintained with regular motorway driving for DPF regeneration. However, early Mk4 Leons (2020-2021) suffer from serious infotainment software problems requiring recalls, and the DSG automatic gearbox has known reliability issues. Manual gearbox versions are significantly more reliable. Not suitable for city-only driving due to DPF requirements. Models from 2022+ with updated software are notably better.
