The original X-Trail was Nissan's first compact SUV for the European market and quickly gained a following as a rugged, practical workhorse. The 2.2 dCi diesel (available as the earlier 114 hp Di and the post-2003 136 hp common-rail dCi) provides adequate power for a car of this size and is generally durable when properly maintained. Its boxy design maximises cabin and boot space, and the optional 4WD system handles light off-road use competently.· more· less

Buy if: You want an affordable, practical diesel SUV with genuine off-road capability and can find a 136 hp dCi model with verified service history.
Avoid if: You do mostly short urban trips (turbo and EGR clogging) or the car shows signs of subframe corrosion or ECU water damage.

Common Problems
Durable when maintained, but age and neglect take their toll
The YD22 diesel engine is fundamentally robust and can exceed 250,000 km with diligent maintenance. The 136 hp common-rail dCi (post-2003) is the better variant, with fewer timing chain issues than the earlier 112 hp Di. However, at 18-24 years old, every T30 now requires careful inspection for corrosion, ECU water damage, and worn turbo components. Budget for preventive work on the turbo, timing chain, and EGR if these have not been addressed. Cars with complete service history, regular oil changes, and evidence of highway use rather than short-trip urban driving are significantly lower risk.

General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Fuel filler tube corrosion (2001-2007 production) Verify completed
Takata passenger airbag inflator (2001-2007 production) Critical - verify completed
Takata airbag replacement recall (vehicles that received like-for-like inflator replacement under previous recall) Critical - verify completed
Engine angle/position sensor fault (selected production dates) Verify completed
The Takata airbag recall is critical and has gone through multiple rounds. Vehicles may have received a like-for-like replacement under an earlier recall and require a second replacement with a non-Takata inflator. Contact Nissan with the VIN to verify that all recalls, including the latest Takata round, have been completed.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (3 years / 100,000 km) Expired on all T30 models
Rust perforation warranty (6 years) Expired on all T30 models
Takata airbag recall Free of charge regardless of age
All X-Trail T30 models are well outside their original factory and rust warranties. The Takata airbag recall remains open and is performed free of charge. No Nissan extended warranty programmes are available for vehicles of this age. Third-party warranty providers may offer coverage but typically exclude vehicles over 15 years old.
