Symptoms begin as a brief rattle on cold start (1-5 seconds), progressing to a sustained rattle lasting 30+ seconds. The chain stretches and the tensioner reaches maximum extension, typically between 120,000 and 180,000 km. Parts (chain, tensioner, guides, sprockets) cost approximately €150-300. Labor is intensive as the front of the engine, engine mount, and sump must be removed, typically requiring 6-8 hours of workshop time. Once water reaches the ECU circuit board, corrosion causes intermittent engine management faults: misfires, stalling, no-start conditions, or erratic idle. Repair involves drying and resoldering the damaged circuit board (€300-500 at an electronics specialist) or replacing the entire ECU (€800-1,500 including coding). The QR20DE uses an aluminium cylinder block that is sensitive to overheating. The thermostat is a known weak point, often sticking closed and allowing the engine to overheat rapidly. When this happens, the aluminium block can warp, leading to head gasket failure.
