Honda's first diesel CR-V, introduced for the final year of the second generation. The N22A1 2.2 i-CTDi was Honda's debut diesel engine, also used in the Accord and Civic of the same era. It uses a timing chain and common-rail injection, producing 140 hp and 340 Nm. No DPF was fitted on this pre-Euro 5 model, which removes one common diesel headache. The CR-V RD4 platform is well-proven, with a real-time all-wheel-drive system and practical interior.· more· less

Common Problems
Honda's first diesel needs attentive maintenance but rewards it with longevity
The N22A1 was Honda's debut diesel engine and carries some first-generation rough edges. The timing chain is the most critical concern: using the correct 0W-30 oil specification is essential for chain longevity. The absence of a DPF is a genuine advantage for short-trip drivers. The turbo, EGR, and DMF/clutch are all known wear points, but none are unusual for a diesel of this era. With documented service history showing correct oil and regular maintenance, many N22A1 engines exceed 200,000 km without major issues. The main risk multiplier is unknown or incorrect servicing history.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Driver's power window switch fire risk (2002-2006 CR-V, original fix 2012) Critical - verify completed
Driver's power window switch re-recall (2002-2006 CR-V, revised fix 2020) Critical - verify completed
Takata airbag inflator (2002-2006 CR-V, multiple phases) Critical - verify completed
The power window switch recall is particularly important as it involves a fire risk. Honda issued two separate recalls for this: the original 2012 fix (Butyl tape) was found to be insufficient, and a 2020 re-recall requires complete switch replacement. Verify both have been completed using the VIN at a Honda dealer.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (3 years / 100,000 km) Expired on all used examples
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Expired on all 2005-2006 models
All CR-V RD4 2.2 i-CTDi models are well outside their original factory and rust perforation warranties. Third-party extended warranties are available but may exclude high-mileage diesel components.
