2014-2019 · 1.2 DIG-T HRA2DDT (115 hp) 4-cylinder turbocharged petrol

Europe's best-selling crossover in its era, the Qashqai J11 offers a comfortable ride and practical cabin. The 1.2 DIG-T is the entry-level turbo petrol and shares its Renault-developed HRA2DDT engine with the Juke and Pulsar. The engine had serious oil consumption and timing chain issues on early production cars, prompting an ECM software update in 2016 and revised piston rings. Post-update cars are significantly more reliable.

Buy if: You find a post-2016 example with confirmed ECM software update, complete service history, and normal oil consumption.
Avoid if: The car is a 2014-2015 model without the ECM update, or if it shows any sign of excessive oil consumption or cold-start rattle.

Common Problems
Pre-2016 cars carry significant engine risk; later cars are much better
The 1.2 DIG-T has a troubled reputation primarily due to the oil consumption and timing chain issues on early production cars. Nissan acknowledged the problem and released an ECM software update in 2016 along with revised piston rings. Cars produced after the update and with confirmed service history are substantially more reliable. However, turbo oil starvation and carbon buildup remain ongoing concerns throughout all model years. The CVT transmission adds another layer of risk compared to manual versions. Despite the Qashqai scoring well in overall reliability surveys, the 1.2 DIG-T engine specifically requires more careful buyer scrutiny than the diesel alternatives.
Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Rear wheel arch protector deformation causing brake hose damage (2014-2016) Verify completed
Child lock switch reduced retention force — door may open when locked (2014-2016) Verify completed
Steering wheel boss specification defect (2014-2016) Verify completed
Electric power steering control unit casting defect — potential loss of power assist (2014-2017) Verify completed
ECM reprogramming for emissions and oil consumption (2015-2016) Critical — verify completed
Contact a Nissan dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The ECM reprogramming recall is particularly important for 2014-2016 models with the 1.2 DIG-T engine, as it directly addresses the oil consumption problem.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (3 years / 100,000 km) Expired on all used cars
Drivetrain extended coverage Check with Nissan — some goodwill extensions were offered for engine failures
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) May still apply on 2014+ models
All Qashqai J11 1.2 DIG-T models are outside their original 3-year factory warranty. Nissan has occasionally offered goodwill contributions toward engine replacement on cars with documented excessive oil consumption, even outside warranty. Always ask the selling dealer about any prior warranty claims or goodwill repairs on the vehicle.

Nissan Qashqai J11 1.5 dCi 2014-2021 Diesel alternative on the same platform. The 1.5 dCi Renault engine avoids the oil consumption and timing chain issues but has DPF clogging risk on short trips. Renault Kadjar 1.3 TCe 2018-2022 Built on the same platform as the Qashqai. The newer 1.3 TCe engine is more refined but has its own timing chain and turbo issues. Hyundai Tucson TL 2015-2020 More reliable overall with 5-year warranty. Fewer powertrain concerns but suspension bushings wear faster. Nissan Qashqai J12 1.3 DIG-T 2021-present Successor with a larger 1.3 DIG-T engine. Fixes the oil consumption issue but introduces a problematic thermostat housing that can crack without warning. Ford Kuga Mk2 1.5 EcoBoost 2013-2019 Comparable size and price. The 1.5 EcoBoost has its own coolant intrusion risk but is generally more robust than the 1.2 DIG-T.
