Nissan Micra 1.4 K12

The K12 Micra uses a TRW electric power steering system integrated into the steering column. The internal control board or motor brushes can burn out, typically between 80,000 and 150,000 km. Failure often starts intermittently before becoming permanent. Symptoms include the power steering warning light and a sudden increase in steering effort. The car remains driveable but steering becomes very heavy at parking speeds. Nissan dealers charge around €1,000-1,200 for a complete column replacement. The column contains an anti-theft chip (NATS) linked to the VIN, which means second-hand units need reprogramming. Specialist repair companies offer reconditioning for €300-450, replacing the internal relays and motor brushes. This is one of the most frequently discussed K12 faults and affects all engine variants equally.

This is a documented issue particularly relevant to the CR14DE 1.4 engine. When the front catalytic converter degrades (accelerated by low-quality fuel), its ceramic substrate can break down into fine dust. This dust is recirculated into the intake through the EGR system, where it acts as an abrasive on the cylinder walls. Over time, this causes increased oil consumption, reduced compression, and rough running. Symptoms include gradual power loss, blue exhaust smoke, and rising oil consumption. A new catalytic converter costs approximately €200-400 for an aftermarket unit, plus €100-200 for fitting. If cylinder wall scoring has already occurred, the damage is irreversible without engine reconditioning (€1,000-1,500). Preventive measures include using quality fuel and monitoring exhaust smoke and oil levels regularly.

Early K12 models (particularly 2003-2004 production) used a weaker timing chain that could stretch prematurely, sometimes below 80,000 km. The CR14DE shares the same chain system as the CR10DE and CR12DE in the K12 family. A stretched chain causes the camshaft and crankshaft sensor signals to fall out of phase, triggering a P0340 camshaft position fault code and putting the engine into limp mode. Symptoms include rough idle, loss of power, and cold-start rattling. Nissan revised the chain components from 2005 onwards, making this primarily a concern for early production cars. Parts (chain, guides, tensioner, sprockets) cost approximately €100-200, with labour running 5-6 hours. Regular oil changes with quality 5W-30 synthetic oil help prevent premature wear.

The K12 uses an electronic throttle body that develops internal electrical faults over time. Unlike many throttle body problems, cleaning the unit does not resolve the issue because the fault lies in the electronics, not carbon buildup. Symptoms include erratic idle speed, hunting revs, stalling at traffic lights, and the engine refusing to rev above 2,000 rpm (typical fault codes P1126 and P1122). Nissan does not sell individual throttle body components, requiring a complete unit replacement. A new OEM unit costs approximately €300-500 fitted. Specialist remanufacturers offer rebuilt units for €200-280. After replacement, the throttle body must undergo an idle relearn procedure. This issue affects all K12 petrol engines.

The boot latch microswitch on the K12 is prone to water ingress and corrosion, particularly in wet climates. When the switch shorts out, it can cause the boot to pop open on its own while driving, refuse to open at all, or create a parasitic battery drain that flattens the battery overnight. This is one of the most common K12 complaints. The switch costs €30-60 and replacement takes under an hour. The wiring loom running through the tailgate hinge area can also fatigue and break from repeated opening and closing. If both switch and wiring need repair, costs rise to €100-200.

Broken front coil springs are a well-documented issue on K12 Micras. The springs corrode from the inside out and eventually snap, typically at the bottom coil where they sit in the spring seat. This results in a sudden clunking noise and visible lean to one side. It is classified as a major defect and a common reason for MOT/TUV failure on older K12s. Both coil springs should be replaced at the same time even if only one has broken. Parts cost approximately €40-80 per pair, with labour around €100-200 per axle. Cars driven in northern Europe with road salt are most susceptible.

If your K12 1.4 has the CVT automatic transmission, be aware that this is a known weak point. Common failures include the secondary drum splitting (the most frequent internal failure), valve body wear allowing oil pressure to bleed off, and transmission control module faults. Symptoms include slipping under acceleration, inability to exceed 30 km/h, jerky engagement, and warning lights. The CVT was not designed for aggressive driving and requires regular fluid changes that many owners neglect. Repair costs often exceed the value of the car at this age. Manual gearbox-equipped K12s are significantly more reliable.
