The K12 Micra was built at Nissan's Sunderland plant on a shared Renault-Nissan platform from 2003 to 2010. The 1.4 CR14DE four-cylinder is the mid-range petrol engine of the K12 lineup, producing 88 hp and offering noticeably better motorway performance than the 1.0 and 1.2 variants. It shares the same CR engine family architecture and platform-level quirks, including the well-known electric power steering column and boot latch issues. Parts are cheap and widely available.· more· less

Very cheap parts and insurance Better motorway ability than 1.0/1.2
Electric power steering failures Cat/EGR can cause cylinder scoring
Buy if: You want a budget city car with enough power for occasional motorway use and can find a post-2005 example with complete service history.
Avoid if: You need a CVT automatic (known for premature failure on this generation) or the car has been run on low-quality fuel for extended periods.

Common Problems
Simple and cheap to fix, with one engine-specific concern
The K12 with the 1.4 CR14DE engine shares most of its reliability profile with the 1.0 and 1.2 siblings. The EPS column, boot latch, and throttle body are well-known platform issues affecting all variants. The 1.4 adds one engine-specific concern: degraded catalytic converter material can enter the engine via the EGR system and score cylinder walls over time. Post-2005 models have improved timing chain components and are generally more reliable than early production cars. Manual gearbox versions are strongly recommended over the CVT automatic. Given the age of these cars (all now 15-22 years old), overall condition and corrosion are the biggest ownership considerations.
