Nissan Leaf 24 kWh ZE0

The 24 kWh battery lacks any active thermal management - it relies solely on passive air cooling. This makes it highly susceptible to heat-accelerated degradation. By 2025-2026, most ZE0 Leafs have lost 3-5 capacity bars (each bar after the first represents approximately 6.25% loss). State of Health below 75% is common on 2010-2013 models. Factors that accelerate degradation include hot climates, regular DC fast charging, charging to 100% frequently, and leaving the car fully charged in the sun. Replacement options range from refurbished 24 kWh packs (€3,500-5,000) to new LFP replacement packs (€4,000-5,500) to Nissan dealer replacement (€7,000-8,000+). Note that on many older Leafs, the battery replacement cost exceeds the car's market value. Nissan's battery warranty covers loss below 9 bars within 8 years / 160,000 km - but most ZE0s are now outside this warranty period.

The ZE0 uses a PTC (Positive Temperature Coefficient) heater element to warm the cabin - there is no heat pump on this generation. The PTC elements are notoriously prone to failure due to a design weakness. When it fails, the climate control displays 0 kW power consumption despite being set to heat, and the car blows cold air. This is particularly problematic in winter as there is no alternative heat source, and it also affects windscreen demisting. Diagnosis is straightforward via the energy display screen. Replacement requires partial steering column removal (approximately 7 hours labor). A new OEM heater element costs €600-750, with total repair running €800-1,400 depending on whether new or used parts are fitted. The replacement part has the same design flaw and will eventually fail again.

The onboard charger converts AC power from a wall socket or public charger into DC for the battery. Early ZE0 models had at least 5 hardware revisions and numerous firmware updates, indicating ongoing reliability issues. The 2012 model year alone had eight different charger versions. Failures typically present as the car refusing to AC charge while CHAdeMO DC charging still works. Internal components (filter capacitors, diodes) degrade and short-circuit over time. A used replacement OBC costs €600-1,200, while new units run €1,500-2,000. Labor adds €300-500. Parts availability can be challenging as these become scarcer.

A weak 12V battery causes approximately 80% of warning-light situations in early Leafs. The car has a parasitic drain that depletes the small 12V battery if left unused for extended periods. Contributing factors include the telematics/CarWings module drawing power, the DC-DC converter not adequately recharging the 12V battery, and any connected accessories (OBD2 readers). Symptoms include complete no-start, dashboard warning lights, and error codes that clear after 12V battery replacement. Nissan has historically dismissed this issue. The fix is straightforward - replace the 12V battery (€150-250) and potentially disconnect the telematics module. However, the underlying cause means batteries may need replacement every 2-3 years rather than the typical 4-5 years.

The DC-DC converter steps down the high-voltage battery to charge the 12V system while driving. When it fails, the 12V battery cannot be maintained, leading to turtle mode, multiple CAN communication errors, and eventually complete loss of function. This is a rare but expensive failure. A new DC-DC converter/charger assembly costs approximately €2,500-3,000, while used units are available for €1,200-1,600. Some owners have experienced this failure more than once. Always rule out a simple 12V battery issue before diagnosing DC-DC converter failure, as symptoms overlap significantly.
