The original mass-market electric car. The first-generation Leaf pioneered affordable EV ownership from 2010, and hundreds of thousands were sold worldwide. Its drivetrain is mechanically simple and proven, but the passively air-cooled 24 kWh battery is the dominant ownership concern. Battery degradation is inevitable and varies enormously depending on climate, charging habits, and usage patterns.· more· less

Extremely simple drivetrain Very low routine maintenance
Battery degradation unavoidable Limited range even when new
Buy if: You need a short-range urban commuter, can verify battery health with LeafSpy, and accept the 80-130 km real-world range.
Avoid if: You need reliable range above 100 km daily or cannot tolerate eventual battery replacement costs that may exceed the car's value.

Common Problems
Simple drivetrain, but battery degradation dominates ownership
The Leaf ZE0's electric motor and reduction gear are virtually bulletproof - drivetrain failures are extremely rare. The dominant concern is battery degradation, which is guaranteed to some degree on every car. The key question is how much capacity remains and whether the owner can live with the reduced range. Beyond the battery, the PTC heater and 12V system are the most common failure points. Always check battery health with LeafSpy before purchase - the dashboard bar gauge alone is too coarse for accurate assessment.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Steering column clip displacement (Feb 2013 - Oct 2014 production) Verify completed
Passenger airbag inflator (Takata) - various build dates Critical - verify completed
Brake control software update (2013-2016 models) Verify completed
Start button sticking in depressed position (Sep 2013 - Jan 2014 production) Verify completed
Contact Nissan with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The steering column and Takata airbag recalls are safety-critical. European recall coverage varies by market - check with your national vehicle authority as well.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (3 years / 100,000 km) Expired on all ZE0 models
Battery capacity warranty (8 years / 160,000 km) Expired on 2010-2017 models (covers loss below 9 bars)
Extended warranty availability Limited - check with Nissan dealers for options
All first-generation Leaf models are now outside both the 3-year vehicle warranty and the 8-year battery capacity warranty. The battery warranty only covered loss below 9 bars (approximately 66-70% capacity) - normal degradation above this threshold was never covered.

Hyundai Kona Electric 64kWh 2018-2023
Much longer range with liquid-cooled battery. Reduction gear bearing wear is the main concern. Better long-term battery health.
BMW i3 120Ah
BMW i3 120Ah 2018-2022
Liquid-cooled battery with minimal degradation. AC compressor failure is the expensive risk item. More range than the 24 kWh Leaf.
Renault Zoe ZE50 R135
Renault Zoe ZE50 R135 2019-2024
Newer EV with good battery durability (94-96% SOH at 100k km). Motor bearing and heat pump are the known risks.
Smart EQ fortwo W453
Smart EQ fortwo W453 2017-2024
Even shorter range but mechanically simple. DC-DC converter and 12V drain are similar weak points to the Leaf.
