The second-generation CR-V is one of the more dependable compact SUVs of its era, built around Honda's well-regarded K20A4 i-VTEC petrol engine and a chain-driven valvetrain. By now most cars have crossed 200,000 km and many are still going, but age-related issues dominate: AC compressor failure (the infamous Black Death), rear differential service neglect on AWD versions, and bodywork corrosion in salt-belt countries. Mechanically simple compared to modern turbo SUVs, with cheap parts and broad indie support.· more· less

Robust K20A4 engine, no turbo Cheap parts, simple to fix
AC compressor 'black death' common Rust on arches and sills
Buy if: You want a reliable older compact SUV with low running costs and accept that bodywork condition matters more than mileage at this age.
Avoid if: The car has been used in a salt-belt region without underbody protection, or the rear differential fluid has never been changed on an AWD version.

Common Problems
Mechanically robust, but body and AC determine the buy
The K20A4 engine and chain-driven valvetrain are well-regarded for high-mileage durability — many CR-Vs reach 300,000+ km on the original engine. The decisive factors at this age are bodywork condition and whether the AC compressor has already failed. A rust-free example with a working AC system and recent rear diff service is a sound buy; a rusty car with broken AC is a money pit regardless of engine condition.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Takata airbag inflators (driver and passenger, 2002-2006) Critical - verify completed
Power window switch fire risk (2002-2006, certain markets) Verify completed
Ignition switch interlock (2002 model year) Verify if applicable
Contact Honda with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The Takata airbag recall is mandatory and unrepaired cars may fail roadworthiness inspection in some EU countries.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (3 years / 100,000 km) Expired on all RD4 CR-Vs
Rust perforation warranty Expired (originally 6 years)
Honda extended warranty Not generally available for cars this old
All Mk2 CR-Vs are far outside their original Honda warranty. Independent third-party warranty providers may offer cover, but typically exclude the high-cost components (AC, transmission, rear diff) most likely to fail. Budget for repairs out of pocket.
