2006-2012 · 2.0 VVT-i (152-158 hp) 4-cylinder petrol (1AZ-FE / 3ZR-FAE Valvematic)

The third-generation RAV4 established the compact SUV formula that dominates the market today. The 2.0 petrol is the simplest powertrain option available in this generation, using the proven 1AZ-FE engine (2006-2008) or the more modern 3ZR-FAE Valvematic (2008-2012). Neither engine is turbocharged, and both use timing chains instead of belts, keeping routine maintenance straightforward.

Simple, proven petrol powertrain Strong parts availability and cheap servicing
Steering shaft clunk widespread Rear diff coupling noise on AWD
Buy if: You want a dependable compact SUV with low running costs and can live with modest performance from the naturally aspirated 2.0.
Avoid if: You need strong motorway acceleration or want an automatic gearbox, as the 4-speed auto is sluggish and the CVT is best avoided.

Common Problems
Reliable and affordable to maintain
The RAV4 XA30 2.0 petrol is one of the more dependable compact SUVs of its era. The most common issue, the steering shaft clunk, is annoying but inexpensive to fix. The rear differential coupling concern only affects AWD models and Toyota addressed it with a warranty enhancement. The naturally aspirated engines are straightforward and long-lived with regular oil changes. Post-2008 facelift models with the 3ZR-FAE add the Valvematic system which introduces a potential failure point, but overall this remains a low-risk used car purchase.
