Toyota's first aluminium-block diesel was developed specifically for the European market, where small diesel superminis were popular in the mid-2000s. The 1ND-TV is one of the lightest production diesel engines at 99 kg and delivers excellent fuel economy. Many examples have reached 200,000+ km without major engine work, though the diesel-specific systems (DPF, EGR, turbo) require more attention than the petrol Yaris siblings.· more· less

Excellent fuel economy (~4.5 l/100 km) Robust 1ND-TV engine block
DPF clogs on short trips (2009+) Head gasket weakness on early cars
Buy if: You regularly drive 20+ km trips, can find a manual gearbox example with full service history, and want a frugal diesel city car.
Avoid if: You primarily make short urban trips under 10 km (DPF problems), need an automatic (MMT gearbox is unreliable), or are looking at a pre-2006 car with unknown head gasket history.

Common Problems
Reliable diesel engine, but requires attentive maintenance
The 1ND-TV is fundamentally a durable engine, and many examples exceed 200,000 km without major work. However, the diesel-specific systems (DPF, EGR, turbo, injectors) require more attention than the petrol Yaris siblings. Pre-2007 cars have an elevated head gasket risk. Cars with MMT automated gearbox carry a significant reliability penalty. The ideal purchase is a 2007+ manual gearbox example with full Toyota service history, used for regular mixed-distance driving.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Takata front airbag inflator (2003-2007 production) Critical - verify completed
Electric power steering relay short circuit (2005-2011 production) Verify completed
Timing chain scraping noise - chain, sprockets, tensioner replacement (pre-July 2006 production, TSB EG-7015) Verify completed
Contact Toyota with the VIN to verify all recalls and TSBs have been completed. The Takata airbag recall is particularly critical for safety. The power steering recall affects the electronic control unit and should be confirmed as resolved.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (3 years / 100,000 km) Expired on all XP90 models
Extended warranty (10 years with annual Toyota service) Expired on all XP90 models
Head gasket extended coverage (early cars) Extended to 160,000 km on affected engines - verify with Toyota
All XP90 Yaris models are well outside their original factory warranty. Toyota historically offered goodwill assistance on known issues like the head gasket, but this is now unlikely given the age of these cars. Extended warranty from third-party providers may be available but cost-effectiveness should be carefully evaluated given the car's low value.
