2016-2018 · 2.5 2AR-FXE Atkinson-cycle hybrid (197 hp combined) NiMH battery, eCVT AWD

The XA40 RAV4 Hybrid was Toyota's first electrified RAV4 for Europe, pairing a 2.5-litre Atkinson-cycle engine with a planetary eCVT and rear electric motor for seamless AWD. The drivetrain is closely related to the Lexus NX 300h and uses proven Prius-derived technology. With no conventional gearbox, no timing belt, and regenerative braking that extends brake pad life considerably, it is one of the cheapest compact SUVs to run.

Common Problems
Excellent reliability for a hybrid SUV
The RAV4 Hybrid XA40 is one of the most reliable hybrid SUVs you can buy. The drivetrain uses proven Prius-derived technology with over 20 years of refinement. The eCVT has no belts, clutches, or torque converter to wear out and is essentially maintenance-free. The 2.5-litre Atkinson-cycle engine uses a timing chain (no belt replacement needed) and runs at lower loads than conventional engines thanks to electric assist. Most issues are minor (12V battery drain, brake noise) and inexpensive to address. Many owners report 150,000+ km with zero major issues beyond routine maintenance.
Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
12V battery fitment - incorrect battery sizes causing short circuit risk (2013-2018 RAV4) Verify completed
Fuel injector torque - risk of fuel leak (Oct 2015 - Dec 2017 production) Verify completed
Low pressure fuel return hose - fuel seepage risk (Oct 2015 - Apr 2017 production) Verify completed
Takata airbag inflator replacement Verify completed
Contact Toyota with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The 12V battery fitment recall is important as incorrectly sized batteries installed by non-Toyota retailers could cause short circuits. The fuel system recalls are also safety-critical.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (3 years / 100,000 km) Expired on all XA40 Hybrid models
Toyota Relax extended warranty Up to 10 years with annual Toyota dealer service
Hybrid battery warranty 5 years in EU (extendable with Toyota Relax)
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) May still be valid on 2016-2018 models
All XA40 RAV4 Hybrids are outside their original 3-year factory warranty. Toyota Relax extends coverage up to 10 years from first registration, provided the car is under 185,000 km and serviced annually at a Toyota dealer. The hybrid battery components have a separate warranty. Verify current warranty status with the selling Toyota dealer.

Toyota RAV4 Hybrid XA50 2019-present Successor with updated A25A engine. More power but early 2019-2020 models had roof rail leaks, HV cable corrosion, and coolant bypass valve recalls. The XA40 is simpler with fewer teething problems. Toyota C-HR 1.8 Hybrid AX10 2016-2023 Smaller Toyota hybrid with the 1.8 2ZR-FXE engine. Similar reliability philosophy. Main issues are windshield stress cracks and 12V battery drain. Hyundai Tucson Hybrid NX4 2021-present Modern competitor with turbo hybrid and 5-year warranty. Higher running costs and more complex powertrain. GPF clogging risk on short trips. Toyota RAV4 2.0 VVT-i XA30 2006-2012 Previous generation with conventional petrol engine. Simpler and cheaper to buy, but higher fuel costs and no electric assist. Steering shaft clunk is the main issue. Toyota Prius XW30 2009-2015 Shares the same hybrid technology lineage. Cheaper to buy and run, but pre-2013 models have EGR-related head gasket risk and catalytic converter theft is common.
