The diesel variant of the second-generation fortwo, powered by a Mercedes-Benz-designed 0.8-litre OM660 three-cylinder turbodiesel. Offered in 45 hp (2007-2009) and 54 hp (2009-2014) forms, the CDI was marketed as an ultra-efficient city commuter capable of returning over 3.3 l/100 km. The engine itself is durable, with well-maintained examples exceeding 250,000 km, but the emission control systems on the later 54 hp version and the automated manual gearbox are consistent sources of trouble.· more· less

Avoid if: The car is a 54 hp model used mainly for short urban trips, or you hear rattling on cold start suggesting timing chain wear.

Common Problems
Durable engine, but gearbox and emission systems need attention
The OM660 diesel engine is fundamentally durable and can exceed 250,000 km with proper maintenance. The main ownership risks come from the automated manual gearbox actuator (affects all variants) and the emission control systems added to the 54 hp Euro 5 version (EGR cooler, DPF, multiple sensors). The earlier 45 hp model avoids most emission-related problems and is generally the more reliable choice. Rust behind the plastic panels is the biggest threat to long-term survival regardless of variant.

General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Rear insulation mat fire risk (2007-2009 production) Verify completed
Handbrake cable adjustment mechanism (2014-2015 models) Verify if applicable
Takata airbag inflator (various production dates) Verify completed
Contact a Smart/Mercedes-Benz dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The rear insulation mat recall is particularly important for early 2007-2009 models due to fire risk.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all W451 CDI models
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Check whether still applicable based on build date
All Smart fortwo W451 CDI models are well outside their original 2-year factory warranty. The 12-year rust perforation warranty from Smart/Mercedes-Benz may still apply to late-production 2013-2014 models. Extended warranty options are limited for these older vehicles.
