The four-seat sibling of the Smart fortwo, built on the Renault Twingo III platform at the Novo Mesto plant in Slovenia. The 0.9 TCe H4B three-cylinder turbo sits behind the rear axle, driving the rear wheels through a 5-speed manual or optional 6-speed Twinamic dual-clutch automatic. The rear-engine layout gives it a remarkably tight turning circle but complicates some repairs and exposes engine components to more road spray.· more· less

Common Problems
Reliable if maintained, but turbo and DCT need monitoring
The Smart forfour 0.9 Turbo shares its Renault-sourced H4B engine with the Twingo and various Renault models, giving it a broad parts supply and well-documented service knowledge. The engine itself is reasonably robust, but the turbo wastegate actuator and VVT solenoid are known weak points, both exacerbated by the rear-engine position exposing components to road spray. Manual gearbox versions are significantly more reliable than Twinamic-equipped cars. With regular oil changes using the correct specification and allowing the engine to warm up properly, most examples can reach 150,000 km without major issues.
