The Smart #5 Brabus runs the smartOS infotainment system shared with the #1 and #3, which has a documented history of software growing pains. Owners of the #1 and #3 report the infotainment screen occasionally freezing and rebooting, the Hello Smart app losing its Bluetooth connection mid-drive, and user preferences (regeneration level, drive mode, cruise control type) reverting to defaults after updates. On the #1 and #3, OTA update 1.3 caused notable regressions including broken scheduled charging and online services disconnecting after deep sleep. Smart has been addressing these with incremental OTA updates (version 2.2.0 rolled out for the #5 in early 2026), but the system remains less polished than established rivals. The cost is typically zero (covered by warranty or OTA fix), though repeated dealer visits for software resets are inconvenient. In rare cases, a full system reflash at the dealer costs €100-200.

A known issue from the Smart #1 and #3 (same SEA platform family) that can carry over to the #5. The electrically operated flush door handles occasionally fail to retract properly, staying partially extended when parked. This triggers a dashboard warning and can prevent the car from locking. On the #1, this affected cars up to a certain production batch, and Smart implemented retrospective fixes at the port of Zeebrugge before dealer delivery. On the Smart #1 and #3 Brabus, a known serial defect involved the front motor and distribution differential being permanently destroyed because dealers did not complete all required pre-delivery service work (both a software update and hardware modification). At least three cars in Germany were affected. Smart subsequently moved the preparation process to the port at Zeebrugge to prevent dealer omissions. Additionally, owners reported a humming noise from the rear axle area, traced to motor mount bushings and rear axle bearings, primarily on cars built before June 2023. While this specific defect should be resolved for the #5 (which entered production later), the pattern of dual-motor calibration and preparation issues warrants attention. If a motor or differential requires replacement out of warranty, costs can reach €2,000-3,000.

A common concern across many EVs, including vehicles on the Geely SEA platform. The always-on telematics modules, connectivity features, and background processes draw power from the 12V battery via the DC-DC converter. If the car sits for 2-3 weeks without being connected to a charger, the 12V battery can go flat, preventing the car from starting. The high-voltage battery remains charged but the car cannot access it without 12V power. Replacement of the 12V battery costs €150-250, with labor around €50-100. Using a trickle charger or keeping the car plugged in during extended parking prevents this issue.

The Brabus uses a heat pump system for cabin heating and battery thermal management. On similarly configured EVs (Hyundai Ioniq 5, BMW iX3, VW ID.4), heat pump failures have been documented, typically appearing between 40,000-80,000 km. Symptoms include loss of heating or cooling, unusual noises from the HVAC system, and significantly reduced range in cold weather. The high-voltage compressor is the most expensive component, with replacement costs of €1,500-3,500 including labor. Given the #5's newness, frequency data is not yet available, but this is a known risk area for EVs in this segment. Covered under the 8-year HV component warranty for the first owner.

The Smart #5 Brabus combines substantial weight (2,453 kg) with massive instant torque (710 Nm) delivered through 255/40 R21 tires. This combination accelerates tire wear considerably compared to lighter or less powerful EVs. Rear tires on AWD performance EVs typically last 20,000-30,000 km depending on driving style, while fronts may last 30,000-40,000 km. A set of four 255/40 R21 performance tires costs €600-1,000 in Europe. Spirited use of the Brabus mode further accelerates wear. This is not a defect but an inherent characteristic of the powertrain and tire combination.

A documented issue on the Smart #1 where the combination of the onboard AC charger and specific wall box models (notably Tesla Gen 3 Wall Connectors) damaged the electronics of the CP (Control Pilot) signal in the car. Smart developed a revised component with changed part numbers and retrofitted affected vehicles. Tesla Superchargers are unaffected; only specific AC wall chargers trigger this problem. While Smart has addressed this with updated hardware, used cars may still have the older revision. Replacement of the onboard charger module costs €300-1,200 depending on extent of damage.
