A compact rear-engined city car developed jointly with Renault, sharing its platform and engine with the Twingo Mk3. The naturally aspirated 1.0 SCe three-cylinder produces 71 hp and uses a timing chain rather than a belt. Available with a 5-speed manual or the Twinamic 6-speed dual-clutch automatic. Production of the petrol forfour ended in 2019, replaced by the electric-only EQ variant until 2021.· more· less

Common Problems
Simple engine keeps overall risk manageable
The naturally aspirated 1.0 SCe H4D engine is a straightforward unit with no turbo, no direct injection, and a timing chain. There are no widespread catastrophic engine failures. The main ownership risk comes from the Twinamic dual-clutch gearbox on automatic-equipped cars, where clutch actuator and clutch pack wear are documented weak points. Manual gearbox cars avoid this entirely and have a notably lower risk profile. The rear-engine layout affects exhaust longevity and engine mount wear, but these are relatively inexpensive to address. Servicing is straightforward at any Mercedes or Smart dealer, and Renault specialists can also work on the shared H4D engine.
