The original Smart fortwo introduced in 1998 as the City-Coupe. The 599cc turbocharged three-cylinder M160 engine was designed by Mercedes-Benz and built exclusively for this car. Available in 45, 55, and 61 hp variants, it is paired with a six-speed Softip automated manual gearbox. The car was facelifted in 2003 with minor chassis and interior improvements before being replaced by the W451 in 2007.· more· less

Common Problems
High-maintenance engine with limited lifespan
The 599cc turbocharged M160 engine is the least reliable powertrain in the Smart fortwo range. Turbo manifold cracking and piston ring wear are well-documented weak points that typically require attention before 100,000 km. The Softip automated gearbox adds clutch actuator failures on top of the engine concerns. Corrosion can be serious on cars from northern European climates. With proper maintenance (fully synthetic oil, regular checks, prompt attention to oil consumption), the engine can exceed 100,000 km, but owners should budget accordingly. Reconditioned engines are relatively affordable (approximately €900-1,200 fitted), which keeps many W450s on the road. For buyers wanting a more reliable fortwo, the W451 with its naturally aspirated 1.0 engine is a significantly better long-term choice.

General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Front brake caliper bolt incorrect torque (1998-2002 production) Verify completed
Lower control arm ball joint excessive wear (early production 1998-2001) Verify completed
Steering column weld deficiency (various 1998-2003 production) Verify completed
Front suspension dust seal non-conformity causing premature corrosion Verify completed
Steering gearbox safety ring improper installation, risk of steering failure Critical - verify completed
Contact a Smart/Mercedes-Benz dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. Given the age of these cars (18+ years), most recall work should have been completed long ago, but verification is still essential. The steering gearbox safety ring recall is the most safety-critical item.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all W450 models
Rust perforation warranty Expired on all W450 models
All Smart fortwo W450 models are well outside their original 2-year factory warranty and any extended coverage. No extended warranty programs are available for cars of this age. Budget for all repairs as out-of-pocket expenses.

Smart fortwo 1.0 W451
Smart fortwo 1.0 W451 2007-2014
Successor with Mitsubishi-sourced naturally aspirated 1.0 engine. Far more reliable powertrain but shares the same automated gearbox weakness. Suspension bush wear is a common trait across both generations.
Fiat 500 1.2 Mk1
Fiat 500 1.2 Mk1 2007-2019
Similar city car role with a proven FIRE engine. Fiat has rust and power steering column failures but the engine is considerably more durable than the 0.6 turbo. Offers rear seats.
Toyota Aygo 1.0 VVT-i AB10
Toyota Aygo 1.0 VVT-i AB10 2005-2014
Among the most reliable small cars available. The 1KR-FE engine is extremely durable, though the optional MMT automated gearbox shares similar jerkiness to the Softip.
Smart EQ fortwo W453
Smart EQ fortwo W453 2017-2024
Electric successor. Far lower day-to-day running costs and no engine wear concerns. Expensive high-voltage system repairs if the DC-DC converter or onboard charger fails.
Fiat Panda 0.9 TwinAir Mk3
Fiat Panda 0.9 TwinAir Mk3 2012-2024
More practical city car but the TwinAir twin-cylinder has its own reliability concerns with oil consumption and belt-driven camshaft. Neither is trouble-free, but the Panda offers more space.
