The 1.5 i-VTEC variant arrived in Europe with the 2018 facelift of Honda's third-generation Jazz. Its naturally aspirated L15B engine offers 130 hp and noticeably more mid-range torque than the 1.3, while keeping the simplicity of a timing chain, no turbo, and port injection. Interior versatility with the Magic Seats remains a class highlight. The 1.5 was offered only in Sport and Dynamic trims, making it rarer than the 1.3 on the used market.
Robust naturally aspirated engine
Exceptional interior versatility
CVT start clutch can judder
VTC actuator cold start rattle
Buy if: You want a reliable, practical supermini with more power than the 1.3 and can verify CVT fluid has been changed regularly.
Avoid if: You only drive very short trips (VTC actuator rattle worsens) or cannot tolerate the slightly higher purchase price over the 1.3.

Common Problems
Multi-plate wet clutch in CVT contaminates with moisture, causing shudder when pulling away · more· less
The CVT automatic in the Jazz GK uses a start clutch instead of a torque converter to get moving from rest. Over time, moisture and debris contaminate the clutch plates, causing a noticeable judder when pulling away slowly, particularly in car parks and at junctions. Honda revised the CVT service interval from 4 years / 80,000 km to 2 years / 40,000 km after recognising this issue. In most cases, a double CVT fluid drain-and-fill using genuine Honda HCF-2 fluid resolves the judder, costing around €200-350. If the clutch plates are already damaged, the gearbox must be removed and the start clutch assembly replaced with a revised Honda part, costing €800-1,200. Manual gearbox models are not affected. The 2018 facelift models (which the 1.5 exclusively is) benefit from improved CVT calibration, making this issue less common than on pre-facelift 1.3 cars.
Weak spring in VTC actuator causes a brief metallic rattle at cold startup · more· less
The L15B engine's VTC (Variable Timing Control) actuator can develop a brief metallic rattle lasting 1-2 seconds on cold startup, typically after the car has been sitting for 6-8 hours or more. The root cause is a weak return spring inside the VTC actuator that fails to hold the lock pin when oil pressure is absent, allowing the actuator vane to contact the housing. Honda issued TSB A16-088 covering this issue and released an updated actuator part. Replacing the VTC actuator alone costs approximately €300-500. If the timing chain has stretched due to prolonged actuator issues (uncommon), the chain, tensioner, and guides should also be replaced, pushing costs to €800-1,000. The rattle is mostly a nuisance rather than a reliability threat, as the noise ceases once oil pressure builds within seconds of starting.
Rear shocks and bushes wear faster than expected, causing knocking noises over bumps · more· less
The rear suspension on the Jazz GK uses relatively soft shock absorbers and rubber bushes that can wear earlier than expected, typically between 60,000 and 100,000 km. Symptoms include knocking or clunking noises over uneven surfaces and a less controlled ride quality. Replacement of both rear shock absorbers costs approximately €150-250 for parts plus 1-2 hours of labour. If the rear trailing arm bushes are also worn, add another €100-200 for parts and labour. This is more of an accelerated wear item than a design defect, but it occurs noticeably earlier on the Jazz than on some competitors.
AC stops cooling due to compressor clutch failure or condenser stone damage · more· less
While not widespread, some Jazz GK owners report AC system failures, usually from a seized compressor clutch or a condenser damaged by stone chips. The condenser sits behind the front bumper and is vulnerable to road debris. Symptoms include the AC blowing warm air or unusual cycling of the compressor. Before committing to a full compressor replacement (€500-900), have an AC specialist diagnose the exact fault, as a failed relay, low refrigerant from a minor leak, or a faulty pressure switch are much cheaper to fix (€100-200). Condenser replacement alone costs around €300-500 including regas.
Water enters the boot via cracked sealant where the roof meets the rear panel · more· less
Some Jazz GK owners report water accumulating in the spare wheel well or under the boot floor. The most common cause is cracked sealant where the roof panel meets the rear tailgate area, allowing water to run into the boot. Another entry point is deteriorating rear light gaskets. Honda extended warranty coverage to 6 years for this issue on affected models. The repair involves removing the interior trim, drying everything thoroughly, and resealing with fresh sealant. Cost is minimal for a DIY repair (€20-50 for sealant) or €100-300 at a garage. The 2018 facelift models are somewhat less prone to this issue than earlier production cars.
One of the most reliable small cars available
The Honda Jazz GK 1.5 is an exceptionally dependable car. The naturally aspirated L15B engine uses a timing chain, has no turbocharger, and requires only routine maintenance to reach high mileages. The 1.5 was only available in Europe from the 2018 facelift onwards, so all examples benefit from improved CVT calibration and updated infotainment. The main areas to watch are CVT judder on automatic models (preventable with regular fluid changes) and the VTC actuator cold start rattle (a nuisance more than a reliability threat). Manual gearbox versions have virtually no known mechanical weak points.

Front wide camera software - may not initialise on startup (late 2019 / early 2020 production)
Verify completed
Contact a Honda dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The Denso fuel pump recall (2017-2019 production) is particularly important to confirm. Honda's UK recall checker is available at honda.co.uk/cars/owners/recalls-and-updates.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (3 years / 100,000 km)
Expired on all 2018-2020 models
Rust perforation warranty (12 years)
Active on all 1.5 models until 2030-2032
All Honda Jazz GK 1.5 models are outside their original 3-year / 100,000 km factory warranty. The 12-year rust perforation warranty may still be active depending on registration date.
