The last naturally aspirated Honda Civic Type R sold in Europe, built on the 8th generation platform with the high-revving K20Z4 engine. The FN2 revs to 8,200 rpm and delivers a raw, analogue driving experience that later turbo Type Rs moved away from. European-only and produced in Swindon, UK, it has a growing following among enthusiasts. Post-2009 facelift cars gained HID headlights and improved door seals, while GT models from April 2010 received a factory limited-slip differential.· more· less

Common Problems
Reliable engine, but rust and age-related wear need attention
The K20Z4 engine is fundamentally robust and can exceed 200,000 km with proper maintenance, including the critical valve clearance checks every 40,000 km. The main ownership concerns are corrosion-related: roof rust from the windscreen seal and rear beam corrosion, both of which are progressive and should be caught early. The 3rd gear synchro issue primarily affects 2007 models and is well understood. Post-2009 facelift cars with the factory LSD are the most desirable and generally have fewer issues with door seal rust. Budget for preventive rust treatment and regular inspection of the rear beam on any FN2.

General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Engine bay wiring harness positioning - fire risk (R/2011/144, all FN2s built Dec 2006 - Sep 2010, 13,183 vehicles affected) Critical - verify completed
Takata passenger airbag inflator (2006-2011 Civic models) Verify completed
Roof rust / windscreen seal (Honda goodwill repair program, up to 10 years old) Verify if applicable
The wiring harness recall (R/2011/144) is the most critical. The harness can be crushed under the engine mount bracket, potentially causing a short circuit or fire. Contact Honda with the VIN to verify completion. The Takata airbag recall also applies to all 8th generation Civics. The roof seal repair was handled on a goodwill basis up to 10 years from manufacture and is now expired for all FN2s.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (3 years / 100,000 km) Expired on all FN2s
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Expired on all FN2s
Roof seal goodwill program (10 years) Expired on all FN2s
All FN2 Civic Type Rs are well outside their original 3-year Honda factory warranty and the 12-year rust perforation warranty. The roof seal goodwill repair program has also expired. Third-party extended warranties are available but may exclude pre-existing corrosion issues.
