The first-generation Jazz brought Honda's clever packaging to European supermini buyers from 2002. The 1.4 i-DSI (actually 1,339cc L13A) uses twin spark plugs per cylinder, a timing chain, and simple naturally aspirated design that routinely exceeds 200,000 km. The Magic Seats folding system was a class-first. Available with a 5-speed manual or a CVT automatic, the Jazz earned a strong reputation in TUV and MOT pass-rate data across Europe.· more· less

Common Problems
One of the most reliable superminis of its era
The GD Jazz with the L13A engine is widely regarded as one of the most dependable small cars ever built. The engine uses a timing chain (no scheduled belt replacement), has no turbocharger, and is mechanically simple. Most issues are age-related wear items rather than design defects. Manual gearbox models are particularly robust. The main area of concern is the CVT automatic, where start clutch judder is a well-documented problem. With proper maintenance, 200,000+ km is realistic without major powertrain repairs.

The Takata airbag recall is critical and affects a very large number of GD Jazz models. Contact Honda with the VIN to verify all recall work has been completed. Repairs are free at any authorized Honda dealer. Do not purchase a GD Jazz without confirming airbag recall completion.
Warranty Status

Gearbox bearing extended warranty Honda offered 7-year coverage, now expired on all models
Boot water ingress extended warranty Honda offered 6-year coverage, now expired on all models
All GD Jazz models are now well outside their original factory warranty and any extended coverage Honda offered. Budget for maintenance and repairs accordingly. Third-party warranty providers may still offer coverage, though premiums on cars this age may not represent good value.
