The AP1 S2000 is Honda's legendary 9,000 rpm roadster, built around one of the highest specific-output naturally aspirated engines ever produced. The F20C is a robust unit when properly maintained, and many examples have exceeded 200,000 km on original internals. As a car now 22-26 years old, condition varies enormously. The biggest ownership risks relate to the valve retainers on track-driven cars, timing chain tensioner wear, gearbox synchro degradation, and soft top deterioration.· more· less

Buy if: You want an analog driving experience with a high-revving engine and can find a well-documented, unmodified example with fresh timing chain tensioner.
Avoid if: You need a low-maintenance convertible for daily use or cannot verify the car's mechanical and modification history.

Common Problems
Robust engine, but age and driving history matter enormously
The F20C is widely regarded as one of the most durable high-revving engines Honda ever produced, and examples with 200,000+ km on original internals exist. However, every AP1 is now over 20 years old, and the car's condition depends heavily on how it was driven and maintained. Valve retainers, timing chain tensioner, and synchro wear are the headline mechanical concerns. The soft top and rust are the main age-related issues. A well-maintained, unmodified car with documented service history is a different proposition entirely from a neglected or heavily modified example.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Oil jet banjo bolt replacement (2-hole to 4-hole, MY2000-mid 2002) Critical - verify completed
Seat belt retractor malfunction (MY2000) Verify completed
Convertible top cover / seat belt slack (MY2000) Verify completed
Tail light / side marker lens non-compliance (MY2000) Verify completed
Contact Honda with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The oil jet banjo bolt recall is particularly important for MY2000-MY2002 cars as it directly affects engine longevity.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (3 years / 100,000 km) Expired on all AP1 cars
Rust perforation warranty Expired (typically 6 years from new)
All AP1 S2000s are well outside their original factory warranty. No extended warranty programs are available from Honda for this model. Third-party warranty providers rarely cover cars of this age. Budget for self-insured repairs.

Mazda MX-5 1.8 NB
Mazda MX-5 1.8 NB 1998-2005
Simpler engine, generally cheaper to maintain. Less power but fewer age-related mechanical concerns. Rust is the main worry.
Toyota GT86 ZN6
Toyota GT86 ZN6 2012-2021
Newer and more reliable overall. Known for valve spring recall on early cars. Coupe only, no convertible top concerns.
Porsche Boxster 2.7 986
Porsche Boxster 2.7 986 1996-2004
Higher running costs across the board. Intermediate shaft bearing and RMS failures are the main risks. More expensive to repair than the S2000.
BMW Z3 2.0 E36
BMW Z3 2.0 E36 1999-2002
Plastic cooling system parts degrade with age. Softer, less engaging chassis. Parts are widely available but overall less reliable than the F20C.
