The Ingenium 2.0 petrol uses a plastic tensioner and guide rail prone to premature wear, particularly on cars built before October 2018 when JLR introduced an improved chain. The classic symptom is a metallic rattle on cold start lasting 2-5 seconds, often triggering fault code P0016. Caused or worsened by extended oil-change intervals and short-trip use. Left unaddressed, chain slack causes valve timing errors and can lead to catastrophic engine damage. Replacement is a full front-of-engine job at €2,500-4,500 at independents, more at dealers. Post-October 2018 cars are significantly less affected.

InControl Touch Pro is widely reported as the XE's biggest weak point. Common symptoms include the main screen not waking on startup, daily freezes and crashes, navigation hanging on address input, and unreliable iPhone Bluetooth. When the system freezes, reversing camera and parking sensors can drop out. Multiple software updates have not fully resolved it, and dealers have reported updates 'bricking' the head unit, requiring full replacement at €1,500-2,500. A simple module reset is sometimes a free dealer fix; replacement is the worst-case outcome.

Many of the XE's coolant pipes and connectors are plastic and become brittle with age and heat cycles, typically failing between 80,000-130,000 km. Symptoms range from slow coolant loss to sudden catastrophic leaks. The oil cooler can also leak internally, mixing coolant and oil — check for milky residue on the oil cap. Repair costs run €800-1,500 for individual pipes; full coolant system refresh including water pump is €2,000-2,500. Many specialists recommend replacing all plastic coolant pipes proactively if one has failed.

Battery drain is one of the most-reported XE complaints. The Body Control Module (BCM) is the usual culprit, failing to fully shut down accessories after lock. Cars left unused for 5-10 days commonly need a jump start. Other electrical issues include flickering instrument cluster needles, intermittent power mirror/window faults, door lock actuator failures and reversing camera blue screens. Some cases resolve with a software update (free at dealer); persistent cases need BCM replacement at €600-1,200. Owners of low-mileage XEs should consider a trickle charger.

The variable valve timing solenoid at the end of the camshaft is the most common minor engine fault on the petrol Ingenium. Symptoms include a check engine light, rough idle, or slight power loss. The part costs around €100-150 and is straightforward to change without specialist tools, making this one of the cheaper faults to fix at an independent shop.
