The AJ133 5.0 V8 uses timing chain tensioners where a hardened steel piston contacts an aluminium-backed guide. Over time, the steel wears through the softer aluminium, allowing the chain to develop slack. Symptoms begin with a rattle on cold start that may progress to warm-start rattle and eventually a restricted performance warning. In severe cases, the chain can skip teeth, causing valve-to-piston contact and catastrophic engine damage. This primarily affects engines built before approximately March 2014, when JLR upgraded the chains from 6.3 mm to 8.0 mm width, improved the tensioners, and added hardened steel inserts to the guides. For the 2009-2012 naturally aspirated XF, all cars have the original-design components. Many specialists recommend proactive replacement around 130,000 km. A full timing chain kit (chains, guides, tensioners, cam sprockets) at a specialist costs approximately £3,000-4,500 (€3,500-5,500). Not all cars will fail, but the risk increases significantly past 130,000 km with the original parts. Regular oil changes with quality oil are the best preventive measure.

The water pump on the AJ133 is widely treated as a wear item by Jaguar specialists. Coolant ingress into the bearing housing corrodes the mechanical seal, causing leaks. Many owners report failure between 80,000 and 130,000 km, with some failing as early as 50,000 km. The pump is accessible at the front of the engine, making replacement relatively straightforward. However, specialists strongly recommend also replacing the plastic coolant crossover pipe at the rear of the engine during water pump service, as this pipe is a separate known failure point. The crossover pipe is molded in two halves and glued together, and it splits from heat cycling. A combined water pump and crossover pipe replacement at an independent specialist costs approximately €800-1,200. If only the water pump is replaced and the crossover pipe fails later, the additional labor can push total costs to €1,500-2,000. On the aluminium-block V8, any coolant loss that leads to overheating can cause cylinder head warping, so catching leaks early is essential.

The motorized rotary gear selector that rises from the centre console when the engine starts is a distinctive X250 feature but also a well-known failure point across all engine variants. The internal mechanism wears over time, causing the dial to jam. When stuck in Park, the car cannot be driven without using the emergency gear release. A new OEM module from Jaguar costs approximately €800-1,000 fitted. However, specialist rebuild services are available from approximately €300-500, where the internal mechanism is refurbished and returned with a warranty. This issue affects all X250 models regardless of engine, and used replacement modules often fail again. The rebuild route is generally considered the better long-term solution.

The 5.0 V8 uses direct fuel injection, meaning fuel is sprayed directly into the cylinders rather than across the intake valves. Without fuel washing over the valves, oil vapour from the crankcase ventilation system gradually forms thick carbon deposits. Over 80,000-120,000 km, this buildup can restrict airflow enough to cause rough idle, misfires, reduced power, and poor fuel economy. Professional walnut shell blasting is the standard cleaning method, costing approximately €600-1,200 depending on whether manifold removal is required for access on both banks. Some owners report that regular use of quality fuel and occasional high-RPM driving helps slow the accumulation. This is not unique to Jaguar but affects all direct-injection engines to some degree.

Early X250 models (2008-2009) were shipped with contaminated differential fluid from the factory, causing accelerated pinion gear wear. Additionally, Jaguar later pursued legal action against the differential seal supplier (Dana UK Axle Ltd) for faulty seals fitted between 2008 and 2010. Symptoms include a groaning or droning noise at motorway speeds, progressing to a chattering sound when cornering.
