The largest MPV in Ford's European lineup, the Galaxy Mk2 shares its platform with the S-Max and Mondeo. It seats seven in three rows with a focus on comfort over the sportier S-Max. The 2.0 TDCi Duratorq diesel, co-developed with PSA, is the most popular engine choice and was offered from 115 to 163 hp across the production run.· more· less

Common Problems
Durable engine, but emissions equipment and Powershift gearbox need careful attention
The 2.0 TDCi Duratorq engine itself is proven and regularly exceeds 200,000 km. The main concerns are the emissions system (DPF, EGR), the dual-mass flywheel, and the Powershift automatic if fitted. Manual gearbox examples with regular motorway use and documented service history are significantly more reliable. Budget for DMF replacement at some point during ownership, and ensure the DPF is in good health before buying. The Galaxy's additional body-specific weak points, particularly the AC system, add to the maintenance picture compared to the lighter S-Max.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Cylinder head overheating causing cracking (Jun 2010 - Dec 2014 build dates) Critical - verify completed
Clutch pressure plate fracture (Aug 2009 - Dec 2014 build dates) Verify completed
Fire risk from fuel leak (Jan 2012 - Feb 2013 build dates) Critical - verify completed
Brake servo vacuum valve causing hard pedal (2006-2009 build dates) Verify completed
Panoramic roof panel bonding failure (2006-2010 models with glass roof) Verify if applicable
Takata airbag inflator (Jan 2006 - Feb 2017 build dates) Verify completed
Contact a Ford dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The cylinder head overheating recall (2010-2014 builds) and fire risk recall (2012-2013 builds) are particularly important to confirm.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all Galaxy Mk2 models
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Expired on pre-2014 models
Extended warranty Available through Ford dealers and third-party providers
All Galaxy Mk2 models are well outside their original 2-year factory warranty. Ford's 12-year rust perforation warranty may still apply to the very latest Mk2 models (2014-2015). Extended warranties are available but check exclusions carefully, as DPF, clutch, and DMF are often classified as wear items and excluded from coverage.

↔ Also consider

Volkswagen Touran 1.9 TDI Mk1
Volkswagen Touran 1.9 TDI Mk1 2003-2010
Compact MPV with the proven 1.9 TDI PD engine. Fewer DPF concerns on pre-2009 models but shares DMF and ABS pump issues. Generally cheaper to run.
Citroen C4 Picasso 1.6 HDi Mk1
Citroen C4 Picasso 1.6 HDi Mk1 2006-2013
Similar DPF and EGR concerns. Uses an Eolys additive system that adds maintenance complexity. Turbo oil starvation is a bigger risk than on the Galaxy.
Volvo XC90 2.4D Mk1
Volvo XC90 2.4D Mk1 2002-2014
Seven seats with AWD, but angle gear and automatic gearbox wear add significant running costs. The D5 diesel is robust but demands premium maintenance budgets.
Volvo V70 D3 P3
Volvo V70 D3 P3 2010-2016
Estate rather than MPV, but similar family-car use case. Shares DPF and EGR concerns. Swirl flap linkage failure is a model-specific weak point.
Volkswagen Tiguan 2.0 TDI Mk1
Volkswagen Tiguan 2.0 TDI Mk1 2007-2016
Five-seat crossover alternative. Similar DPF and EGR issues. Pre-2009 models have a known oil pump drive shaft defect that risks engine failure.
