This vaporizer can become blocked with carbon buildup, typically around 150,000 km, and the glow plug element within it weakens over time. These vanes can stick from carbon buildup if the car is driven too gently or only on short trips, as the vanes remain in the same position for extended periods. Symptoms include loss of power, limp mode activation, black smoke, and diagnostic code P2263 (boost pressure performance). Symptoms include diesel smell in the engine bay, hard starting, and visible fuel weeping around the injectors. Seal replacement is inexpensive at €200-400 including labour. The Siemens/Continental piezo injectors themselves can fail internally after 150,000+ km, causing rough idle, misfires, and black smoke. A single injector costs €200-400 reconditioned or €400-600 new. If all four need replacing, expect €1,500-2,000 at a specialist. Injectors can seize in the cylinder head, requiring specialist extraction tools that add to labour costs.

Specialists describe the AC system as one of the most common failure areas on the Mk2 Galaxy specifically. The receiver/drier unit corrodes over time, allowing a slow gas leak that gradually reduces cooling performance. If ignored, the compressor has to work harder and can fail, turning a €400 repair into a €1,000-1,200 job requiring full system replacement (compressor, condenser/drier, expansion valve, flush, and regas).
