NIO's flagship electric SUV for Europe, sold as the ES8 in China. Built on the NT2.0 platform with a 180 kW front induction motor and 300 kW rear permanent magnet motor, the EL8 delivers 653 hp and 850 Nm through all-wheel drive. Six seats instead of seven give a more spacious, luxury-oriented cabin. The 100 kWh battery provides roughly 490-510 km WLTP range, and NIO's battery swap network allows a full battery exchange in under five minutes where stations exist. Standard equipment includes dual-chamber air suspension, LiDAR-based ADAS, and a premium interior. However, NIO's European operations have been in significant difficulty since late 2024, with sales collapsing and the service network remaining very thin.· more· less

Common Problems
Well-engineered vehicle with significant brand and service uncertainty
The EL8 itself is a technically impressive luxury EV with strong performance, lavish equipment, and solid Euro NCAP safety credentials from the ES8 generation. The drivetrain and battery are covered by comprehensive warranties (5 years/150,000 km vehicle, 8 years/160,000 km HV battery). However, NIO's collapsing European sales, thin service network, extended parts wait times, and uncertain long-term commitment to the European market create genuine ownership risks that go beyond the car's engineering. Buyers should confirm that a NIO service point with parts stock is accessible within reasonable distance and factor steep depreciation into their purchase decision.

General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
ES8/ES6/EC6 screen blackout software fix (Feb 2026, 246,229 vehicles, Gen 1 models 2018-2023) Verify if applicable
NEV-P50 battery module fire risk (2019, 4,803 ES8s produced Apr-Oct 2018) Verify if applicable
The two major recalls above affected earlier-generation ES8 models (NT1.0 platform, 2018-2023 production). The current NT2.0 EL8 (2024 onward) was not directly affected, but shares some platform architecture. Contact NIO with the VIN to verify whether any technical service actions or software updates apply to the specific vehicle.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (5 years / 150,000 km) Likely still active on most used EL8s (first deliveries Sept 2024)
HV battery warranty (8 years / 160,000 km) Active on all current EL8s, minimum 70% capacity guaranteed
Electric motors and drive unit Covered under factory warranty period
BaaS battery subscription €289/month for 100 kWh if battery not purchased outright
NIO offers a 5-year/150,000 km vehicle warranty and an 8-year/160,000 km warranty on the high-voltage battery with a 70% capacity guarantee. Most used EL8s will still be within warranty given the model's recent European launch in September 2024. Verify with NIO that the warranty transfers to subsequent owners. If the car was purchased under the Battery-as-a-Service model, the buyer assumes the monthly subscription obligation.
